Global Action Plan (GAP) International is a global network of organisations who work together with the aim of empowering individuals to adopt sustainable lifestyles. The network comprises 21 member organisations which span across 16 countries all over the world, including Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America.
GAP International runs regular events for its member organisations, which hold a common theme of sustainability and behaviour change. Members also collaborate on various international programmes, from inspiring water-wise learners in schools and creating energy efficient households and communities, to helping people live happier, healthier, and more planet-friendly lifestyles.
The mission of GAP I is to be a global behaviour change catalyst. All members of GAP I work together to promote and implement approaches that empower people around the world to adopt truly sustainable lifestyles. GAP I's vision is a thriving planet with caring people and resilient societies.
All GAP I programmes are based on three fundamental values:
1) GAP I is aspirational: The network shares a positive vision of a more sustainable world where engaged people live in just and inclusive societies that respect planetary boundaries.
2) GAP I empowers people to change the way they live and work. GAP I meets people where they are and supports them in finding their own motivation for change.
3) GAP I is impactful: GAP I develops programmes that use the latest research findings to bring about measurable and lasting change. The network is always action-orientated and works on long-term solutions.^
“Action” is the keyword to GAPI’s common approach. GAP I sees action as practice, as a way of transforming behaviour, social arrangements, rules and policies in response to the manifold global and local crises with which people are confronted. Action is not a one-off exercise. It allows for practising and experiencing actual changes. Through action, people are becoming empowered, individually and collectively.
GAP International’s approach to behaviour change is cyclical and based on the belief that engaging a person’s emotions, desires, beliefs and social relationships is the best way to create true care for long-lasting, continuous action. Thus, it is a process of ‘success’ and ‘relapse’ and a process of enthusiasm and frustration that is gradual and requires long-term attention and care. To the extent that a group or community embraces the change process, believes in it and takes care of it, the changes will become more embedded in the daily life of the group, they will go deeper and wider, and they will last longer.
GAP-I members support the people they work with – young or adult – to lead lives, choose education and career pathways and make daily choices and decisions that are in closer alignment with our natural compassionate values. They are supported in building resilience against and crowding out the all-pervading self-interest values continuously flooding our society and communities. GAP I helps people to develop the curiosity, confidence, capability, and compassion to question and challenge the status quo and become change makers for life, no matter what the setting, the issue or their age and stage.
It is in the practice itself that people experience being in charge of their own behaviour change while acquiring the necessary information and knowledge, rather than being simply recipients of such information. It is in the practice of actually changing behaviour that people actively learn new skills and new attitudes and develop new norms governing their relationships with others.
An ecovillage is a traditional or intentional community that aims to become more socially, culturally, economically and/or environmentally sustainable. An ecovillage strives to have the least possible negative impact on the natural environment through the intentional physical design and behavioural choices of its inhabitants. It is consciously designed through locally owned, participatory processes to regenerate and restore its social and natural environments. Most range from a population of 50 to 250 individuals, although some are smaller, and traditional ecovillages are often much larger. Larger ecovillages often exist as networks of smaller sub-communities. Some ecovillages have grown through like-minded individuals, families, or other small groups—who are not members, at least at the outset—settling on the ecovillage's periphery and participating de facto in the community. There are currently more than 10,000 ecovillages around the world.

Community informatics (CI) is an interdisciplinary field that is concerned with using information and communication technology (ICT) to empower members of communities and support their social, cultural, and economic development. Community informatics may contribute to enhancing democracy, supporting the development of social capital, and building well connected communities; moreover, it is probable that such similar actions may let people experience new positive social change. In community informatics, there are several considerations which are the social context, shared values, distinct processes that are taken by members in a community, and social and technical systems. It is formally located as an academic discipline within a variety of academic faculties including information science, information systems, computer science, planning, development studies, and library science among others and draws on insights on community development from a range of backgrounds and disciplines. It is an interdisciplinary approach interested in using ICTs for different forms of community action, as distinct from pure academic study about ICT effects.

There are multiple perspectives on how to measure sustainability as there is no universal standard. Tzedek is a UK-based registered charity organisation which aims to provide a Jewish response to the problem of extreme global poverty. Registered as a charity in 1993, Tzedek has a number of overseas development programmes, working closely with local NGOs to alleviate extreme poverty in Northern Ghana and Northeast & Southeast India. As well as supporting local NGOs within these regions, Tzedek aims to develop the leadership skills of young Jewish leaders within the community to provide a long-term, sustainable solution to global poverty.
Founded in 1999, Alliance India is a non-governmental organisation operating in partnership with civil society, government and communities to support sustained responses to HIV in India that protect rights and improve health. Complementing the Indian national programme, we build capacity, provide technical support and advocate to strengthen the delivery of effective, innovative, community-based HIV programmes to vulnerable populations: sex workers, men who have sex with men (MSM), transgender people, hijras, people who inject drugs (PWID), and people living with HIV.
Global citizenship education (GCED) is a form of civic learning that involves students' active participation in projects that address global issues of a social, political, economic, or environmental nature. The two main elements of GCE are 'global consciousness'; the moral or ethical aspect of global issues, and 'global competencies', or skills meant to enable learners to participate in changing and developing the world. The promotion of GCE was a response by governments and NGOs to the emergence of supranational institution, regional economic blocs, and the development of information and communications technologies. These have all resulted in the emergence of a more globally oriented and collaborative approach to education. GCE addresses themes such as peace and human rights, intercultural understanding, citizenship education, respect for diversity and tolerance, and inclusiveness.
Women's empowerment may be defined in several method, including accepting women's viewpoints, making an effort to seek them and raising the status of women through education, awareness, literacy, equal status in society, better livelihood and training. Women's empowerment equips and allows women to make life-determining decisions through the different societal problems. They may have the opportunity to re-define gender roles or other such roles, which allow them more freedom to pursue desired goals.

Action for Climate Empowerment (ACE) is a term adopted by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). It refers to Article 6 of the Convention's original text (1992), focusing on six priority areas: education, training, public awareness, public participation, public access to information, and international cooperation on these issues. The implementation of all six areas has been identified as the pivotal factor for everyone to understand and participate in solving the complex challenges presented by climate change. The importance of ACE is reflected in other international frameworks such as the Sustainable Development Goals ; the Global Action Programme for Education for Sustainable Development ; the Aarhus Convention (2011); the Escazú Agreement (2018) and the Bali Guidelines (2010).
Climate change education (CCE) is education that aims to address and develop effective responses to climate change. It helps learners understand the causes and consequences of climate change, prepares them to live with the impacts of climate change and empowers learners to take appropriate actions to adopt more sustainable lifestyles. The Programme for People and Planet is a programme of events that was inaugurated at Expo 2020 Dubai and took place throughout a six-month period between October 2021 and March 2022. It was endorsed and adopted by the Cabinet of the United Arab Emirates in April 2021 and has received support from various United Nations agencies and offices. The Programme focused on areas such as social development, culture, economics, environmental issues, gender rights, and futurist topics, among others.
