Goldthorpe is a village within the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley, in South Yorkshire, England. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, it was anciently a small medieval farming village, Goldthorpe is recorded in the Domesday Book and was under the Manor of Bolton upon Dearne which was once owned by Roger de Busli. The village falls within the Dearne North Ward of the Barnsley MBC.

The Super League Tri-series was an international rugby league football tournament contested in 1997 between Queensland, New South Wales, and New Zealand representative rugby league teams. It was run by the breakaway Super League organisation as an alternative to the Australian Rugby League's traditional State of Origin series, with each of the two series involving exclusively players contracted to clubs of their respective League. New South Wales were overall winners of the Tri-series, defeating Queensland in the final.
Noel Goldthorpe is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in the halves in the 1990s. He played most of his career for the St George Dragons. Goldthorpe also played for the Western Suburbs Magpies, Hunter Mariners, Adelaide Rams and the North Queensland Cowboys, whom he captained.
Ernest Holroyde Goldthorpe was an English footballer who played as a forward. He was born in Middleton, Leeds. During the First World War he served with the pay corps of the Coldstream Guards and while stationed in London he joined Tottenham Hotspur, before moving back north to Bradford City, where he played 19 games and scored six goals. He played two injury-hit seasons with Leeds United, appearing in the club's first ever game. A brief return to Bradford City, was followed by a move to Manchester United in 1922, making his debut at Old Trafford against Fulham in October 1922. He scored four goals against Notts County in 1923, and a total of 15 goals in 27 matches. In 1925, he was transferred to Rotherham United.
