Mohammad Mokhber is the acting President of Iran. He is currently serving his term as acting president and, second to the Supreme Leader, is leading an interim government of the Islamic Republic of Iran. [1] [2] On 19 May 2024, after the death of President Ebrahim Raisi, Mokhber assumed the role of Acting President of Iran and was confirmed in his position by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on 20 May. [3] The cabinet of Mohammad Mokhber was inherited from the cabinet of Ebrahim Raisi. The main responsibility of this government will be holding a new presidential election which is set to be held on 28 June 2024. [4] [5]

    The Cabinet of Iran is a formal body composed of government officials, ministers, chosen and led by the President of Iran. Its composition must be approved by a vote in parliament. According to the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran, a president may dismiss members of the cabinet, but must do so in writing, and new appointees must again be approved by parliament. The cabinet meets weekly on Saturdays in Tehran. There may be additional meetings as circumstances require. The president chairs them.     Presidential elections were held in Iran on 18 June 2021, the thirteenth since the establishment of the Islamic Republic in 1979. Ebrahim Raisi, the then Chief Justice of Iran, was declared the winner in a highly controversial election. The election began with the mass disqualification of popular candidates by the Guardian Council, and broke records of the lowest turnout in Iranian electoral history, as well as had the highest share of protest blank, invalid and lost votes despite a declaration by the Supreme Leader of Iran, Ali Khamenei, considering protest voting religiously forbidden (haraam) as it would "weaken the regime." Reporters Without Borders reported 42 cases of journalists being summoned or threatened for writing about candidates, and the chief of the police threatened people who discouraged others to vote.

    On 19 May 2024, an Iranian Air Force helicopter crashed near the village of Uzi, East Azerbaijan, Iran, killing President of Iran Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, Governor-General of East Azerbaijan Malek Rahmati, representative of the supreme leader in East Azerbaijan Mohammad Ali Ale-Hashem, the head of the president's security team, and three flight crew. It was en route in a convoy of three from the Giz Galasi Dam to Tabriz.

    Malek Rahmati was an Iranian politician who served as governor-general of East Azerbaijan province from January 2024 until his death in May 2024. He had previously served as deputy director of the Astan Quds Razavi from 2021 to 2023, and headed the Privatization Organization of Iran from 2023 to 2024.

    Early presidential elections in Iran will be held on 28 June 2024 following the death of President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash on 19 May.
