Mohammad Mokhber was the acting President of Iran. He served his term as acting president and led an interim government of the Islamic Republic of Iran. [1] [2] On 19 May 2024, after the death of President Ebrahim Raisi, Mokhber assumed the role and was confirmed in his position by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on 20 May. [3] The cabinet of Mokhber was inherited from the cabinet of Ebrahim Raisi. The main responsibility of this government was holding a new presidential election which the first round was held on 28 June 2024 [4] [5] and the second round on 5 July 2024. [6]

    Hassan Rouhani, the incumbent president of Iran, launched his reelection campaign for the presidential office in February 2017.     Presidential elections were held in Iran on 18 June 2021, the thirteenth since the establishment of the Islamic Republic in 1979. Ebrahim Raisi, the then Chief Justice of Iran, was declared the winner in a highly controversial election. The election began with the mass disqualification of popular candidates by the Guardian Council, and broke records of the lowest turnout in Iranian electoral history, as well as had the highest share of protest blank, invalid and lost votes despite a declaration by the Supreme Leader of Iran, Ali Khamenei, considering protest voting religiously forbidden (haraam) as it would "weaken the regime." Reporters Without Borders reported 42 cases of journalists being summoned or threatened for writing about candidates, and the chief of the police threatened people who discouraged others to vote.

    On 19 May 2024, an Iranian Air Force helicopter crashed near the village of Uzi, East Azerbaijan, Iran, killing President of Iran Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, Governor-General of East Azerbaijan Malek Rahmati, representative of the supreme leader in East Azerbaijan Mohammad Ali Ale-Hashem, the head of the president's security team, and three flight crew. It was en route in a convoy of three from the Giz Galasi Dam to Tabriz.

    Masoud Pezeshkian is the ninth President of Iran. He took the position on 28 July, after the presidential election that was held in Iran in June–July 2024. His presidential decree was signed on July 28, 2024, by the leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ali Khamenei, and his government formally started its work. In his first act as president, Pezeshkian appointed Mohammad Reza Aref as the First Vice President and Mohsen Haji Mirzaei as Chief of Staff. On 21 August, the Islamic Consultative Assembly approved the nomination of Pezeshkian's entire cabinet, the first time it had done since 2001.
