HK Riga was a Latvian ice hockey team. They played in the 1997-98 Eastern European Hockey League season.

Ice hockey is a contact team sport played on ice, usually in a rink, in which two teams of skaters use their sticks to shoot a vulcanized rubber puck into their opponent's net to score points. The sport is known to be fast-paced and physical, with teams usually consisting of six players each: one goaltender, and five players who skate up and down the ice trying to take the puck and score a goal against the opposing team.

The 1997–98 Eastern European Hockey League season, was the third season of the multi-national ice hockey league. 10 teams participated in the league, and HK Sokol Kiev of Ukraine won the championship.

History

The club was founded in 1997, and began playing in the Eastern European Hockey League. Their stay in the EEHL lasted only one year, and the team folded after their first season.

Eastern European Hockey League (EEHL) was a regional ice hockey league which existed from 1995 to 2004.

HK Riga finished with an 8-27-1 record, with 82 goals for, and 177 goals against.

Edgars Masaļskis Latvian ice hockey player

Edgars Masaļskis is a Latvian ice hockey coach and former player. Playing as a goaltender, Masaļskis represented the Latvian national team, and has played for a number of clubs, with five seasons in Liepājas Metalurgs as his longest stay at any club. He retired after the 2016–17 season, and joined Dinamo Riga's coaching staff on October 2, 2017.

Aleksejs Širokovs Latvian ice hockey player

Aleksejs Širokovs is a Latvian professional ice hockey player currently playing for Kazzinc-Torpedo of the Kazakhstani Championship. Most of his professional playing career Širokovs spent in Latvian Hockey League's club HK Liepājas Metalurgs, twice becoming Latvia's champion. From 2004 until 2007 Širokovs played in several Russian Superleague and Russian Major League clubs, but played the 2007-08 season in Belarusian Extraliga club Metallurg Zhlobin.

Born during the Soviet era, Irbe played for various Soviet league teams and the Soviet Union national team before moving to North America in 1991. HK Riga 2000

HK Riga 2000 was a Belarusian Extraliga team based in Riga, Latvia. The team had played in the LHL since it was founded. In 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons the club also iced a team in the Belarusian Hockey League, and in 2005-06 finished 3rd. HK Riga 2000 was first foreign team to finish in top three of Belarusian Open Championship. The club has also played several years in the Continental Cup, winning silver in 2005-06 and 2007-08. Before the 2009-2010 KHL season the team was merged into HK Dinamo/Juniors Rīga, the farmclub of KHL side Dinamo Rīga.
