This film premiered 18 March 2010 at the Utopolis in Luxembourg City. The film is entirely spoken in Luxembourgish and French, but English subtitles are shown. [2]

Synopsis

In the 2010 documentary "Hamilius: Hip Hop Culture in Luxembourg" a production of Antevita Films. Produced by Raoul Nadalet and directed by Alain Tshinza, the movie showcases the growth of the culture through the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s in the small country of Luxembourg. Centered around the Four elements of hip hop (Breakdance, Graffiti, Rap and DJing) the movie follows local practitioners from the different generations and gives an in-depth view of a culture that is often associated with violence and juvenile delinquency.

Named after the tunnel under the Émile Hamilius square at 'Le Centre Hamilius' the same name that is symbolic of the provincial state, which became a meeting point for dancers and members of the local hip-hop scene. The film offers an interesting angle on Luxembourgish culture and language through several generations of an art scene and movement which has seen its active members grow to positions as scholars, professors, entrepreneurs and journalists, coming from a space that is often swept under the rug. Wild Style is a 1983 American hip hop film directed and produced by Charlie Ahearn. Hip hop music arrived in Cuba via radio and TV broadcasts from Miami. During the 1980s, hip hop culture in Cuba was mainly centered on breakdancing. By the 1990s, with the collapse of the Soviet Union and the onset of the Special Period, young rappers, exposed to foreign tourists whose wealth highlighted their struggle, turned to rapping to affirm their heritage and advocate for further revolutionary reforms.

The Music of Luxembourg is an important component of the country's cultural life. Low bap is a subgenre of the Greek hip hop music scene that emerged in the mid-1990s as the sound of the prominent Greek hip hop group Active Member. It is characterized by slower tempo and rapping than usual, often combined with lyrics with sociopolitical content. The words "low bap" is derived from the boom bap hip hop subgenre from the East Coast of the United States. Kenneth James Gabbert, better known by his stage name Ken Swift, is a second generation b-boy, or breakdancer. He was a longtime member and key figure in the Rock Steady Crew, and its former Vice President. He is now President of the Breaklife and VII Gems Hip Hop movement in New York City. Ken Swift began b-boying in 1978, at the age of twelve, when he was inspired by dancers on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Widely known in the breakdancing world as "the Epitome of a B-Boy," he is widely considered by b-boys to be the individual who has had the greatest influence on breakdancing. Ken Swift is credited with the creation of many dance moves and terminology. His original footwork and "freeze style" became a foundational part of breaking, which were considered new concepts at the time.

The Carter is a 2009 documentary film about the American hip hop recording artist Dwayne Michael Carter, Jr., better known as Lil Wayne. The film was directed by Adam Bhala Lough and produced by Joshua Krause and Quincy Jones III, and documents Lil Wayne in the period before and shortly after the release of his studio album, Tha Carter III, which achieved platinum status and critical acclaim, and sold one million copies in one week. After being shown at the Sundance Film Festival, it was subjected to a lawsuit by Carter to block distribution but eventually was released direct to DVD and iTunes, where it topped all movie charts. The film has since been banned from legal sale again but is widely bootlegged on the Internet. Place Émile-Hamilius is a square in the Ville Haute quarter of Luxembourg City, located between the Boulevard Royal and Rue Aldringen. It is served by the Hamilius stop on the T1 line of the Luxembourg City tramway. The square is named after Luxembourgish footballer and politician Émile Hamilius (1897-1971), who was mayor of Luxembourg City from 1946 to 1963.
