Hans Roland

Hans Roland (born 1931) is an Australian author and teacher.

Born in Hamburg, Germany, in 1931, he grew up at the time of the rise of the Nazi Party. Whilst Roland joined the Hitler Youth his family joined an underground movement to assist Jews to leave Germany. Later his Hitler Youth group fought against the invading Russians. He wrote about his experiences in A Family Under the Jackboot. In 1952 he emigrated to Australia, where he taught woodworking at the Royal Victorian Institute for the Blind.

The group conducted an anonymous leaflet and graffiti campaign that called for active opposition to the Nazi regime. They, as well as other members and supporters of the group who carried on distributing the pamphlets, faced show trials by the Nazi People's Court ; many of them were imprisoned and executed.

Herbert Norkus was a Hitler Youth member who was killed by German Communists. He became a role model and martyr for the Hitler Youth and was widely used in Nazi propaganda, most prominently as the subject of novel and film Hitler Youth Quex.

Jackboots on Whitehall is a 2010 British adult animated/puppet satirical action comedy film set in an alternative history Second World War, in which Nazi Germany has seized London. The British must band together at Hadrian's Wall if they are to thwart the German invasion. Conceived by Edward and Rory McHenry, it is the first of its kind to feature animatronic puppets and the voices of well-known British actors including Ewan McGregor, Rosamund Pike, Richard E. Grant, Timothy Spall, Richard O'Brien and Richard Griffiths. The film was executive produced by Frank Mannion.

Karl Ernst was an SA-Gruppenführer who, from March 1933, was the SA Commander in Berlin. Prior to joining the Nazi Party, he had been a hotel bellhop and a bouncer at gay nightclubs. He was one of the chief participants in the extrajudicial execution of Albrecht Höhler. Ernst was himself extrajudicially executed in the Night of the Long Knives.

In 1946, he became a co-founder of DEFA, the East German state-owned film studio, as well as one of its directors and board members.
