Happy Returns is a software and reverse logistics company that works with online merchants to handle product returns. Purchased items can be returned in person without boxes or labels at third-party locations known as "Return Bars" including The UPS Store, Staples Inc., , and Ulta Beauty stores, [1] with specific locations searchable on Happy Returns’ website. Consumers can receive their refunds without packaging items, printing and affixing labels, or waiting for mailed packages to reach their destination. [2]

Contents

The company facilitates returns for many brands, including Levi's, Revolve, Everlane, Lands' End, Gymshark. [3] Amazon later developed a similar program in conjunction with Kohl’s stores to accommodate its shoppers. [2]

Happy Returns aggregates and ships returns from its return locations to warehouse hubs, where returns are sorted, processed, and dispositioned, and then bulk shipped back to merchant warehouses.[ citation needed ] Waste is reduced because shoppers do not need to use a new box to ship out returns. [4] [5]

History

David Sobie and Mark Geller co-founded Happy Returns in July 2015. The two met at NordstromRack.com/HauteLook, where they created and launched a similar program enabling shoppers to return online purchases to physical stores. Happy Returns opened its first Return Bar location in April 2016. [6]

In June 2021, Happy Returns was acquired by PayPal. [7]

In October 2023, it was announced Happy Returns had been acquired by UPS from PayPal [8] for $455 million. [9]

Package redirection scam Form of e-commerce fraud

A package redirection scam is a form of e-commerce fraud, where a malicious actor manipulates a shipping label, to trick the mail carrier into delivering the package to the wrong address. This is usually done through product returns to make the merchant believe that they mishandled the return package, and thus provide a refund without the item being returned. It can also be done by the seller, generally by creating fraudulent online stores or creating fake listings on sites such as eBay or Mercari. This makes it very hard to perform a chargeback, as the tracking shows the item has been delivered. This is also known as an FTID scam, standing for Fake Tracking ID. When this scam is successful, the tracking number will show that the package has been delivered to the correct address, when the package was instead delivered to a different address. This package is generally empty or filled with garbage. However, this scam has mostly been “patched” via new technology provided by the various couriers globally. It is estimated the scam cost retailers £18,000,000,000 in lost revenue.
