South African Airways Flight 295 was a commercial flight from Chiang Kai-shek International Airport, Taipei, Taiwan to Jan Smuts International Airport, Johannesburg, South Africa, with a stopover in Plaisance Airport, Plaine Magnien, Mauritius. On 28 November 1987, the aircraft serving the flight, a Boeing 747 Combi named Helderberg, experienced a catastrophic in-flight fire in the cargo area, broke up in mid-air, and crashed into the Indian Ocean east of Mauritius, killing all 159 people on board. An extensive salvage operation was mounted to try to recover the black box recorders, one of which was recovered from a depth of 4,900 metres (16,100 ft).
Helderberg College of Higher Education is a private higher education institution situated in Somerset West, South Africa, about thirty minutes from Cape Town. It was established in 1893 - the first Seventh-day Adventist College established outside of North America under the name "Union College". It moved to its present location in 1928, making it the oldest Adventist college on the continent of Africa. It is owned and operated by the Southern Africa Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, with headquarters in Bloemfontein, South Africa.
Strand is a seaside resort and suburb of the City of Cape Town in the Helderberg region, situated on the north-eastern edge of False Bay and near the foot of the Hottentots Holland Mountains. Its geographical position is between Somerset West and Gordon's Bay, and is about 50 km southeast of Cape Town City Bowl. Strand is in the Western Cape province of South Africa, and has a population of approximately 50,000. Strand's main attraction is the beach; 5 km of white sandy beach off False Bay.

Gordon's Bay is a harbour town in the Western Cape province of South Africa, close to Strand. It is included in the City of Cape Town metropolitan municipality as a suburb in the Helderberg area, It is situated on the shores of Gordon's Bay in the northeastern corner of False Bay about 50 km from Cape Town to the south of the N2 national road and is named after Robert Jacob Gordon (1743–1795), the Dutch explorer of Scottish descent.

Faure is a hamlet some 16 km south-west of Stellenbosch and 13 km north-west of Strand. Administratively it is a suburb of the City of Cape Town, and is in the Helderberg region. Nearby is the kramat or tomb of Sheik Yusuf (1626-1699), an Islamic expatriate priest. Faure is a common surname; it is uncertain after whom this place was named. It may have been named after Pieter Faure, the name of South Africa’s first trawler which arrived in Table Bay in 1897.
