Henry Seamonds was an English-born gynaecologist, who grew up in Sydney, Australia. Watching Sydney Hakoah one day, he responded to the call for a doctor when a player was injured. Asked if he would become club doctor, he declined but became involved in administration of the game, becoming Chairman and Treasure of the New South Wales Federation of Soccer Clubs. [1] He was the founding Chairman of the Australian Soccer Federation from 1961 to 1963. He died in Melbourne on 18 February 1963 after suffering a heart attack during the lunchtime adjournment of a particularly heated meeting on the issue of the readmission of Australia to FIFA. [2]

Hakoah Sydney City East FC

Maccabi Hakoah Sydney City East FC, commonly known as Maccabi Hakoah, is an Australian semi-professional soccer club based in Sydney, New South Wales. The club was formed in 1939 as Sydney Hakoah by members of Sydney's Jewish community. They played between 1977 and 1986 in the National Soccer League as Eastern Suburbs (1977–1979) and Sydney City (1979–1987). One of the most successful sides in New South Wales and interstate competitions in the 1960s and early 1970s coached by the now retired Bob Szatmari, Hakoah were also one of the main instigators for the establishment of a national league. The club currently competes in the National Premier Leagues NSW, with games played from Hensley Athletic Field.

Football Federation Australia sports governing body

Football Federation Australia (FFA) is the governing body of soccer, futsal, and beach soccer within Australia. The FFA is headquartered in Sydney. Although the first governing body of the sport was founded in 1911, FFA in its current form was only established in 1963 as the Australian Soccer Federation. It was later reconstituted in 2003 as the Australian Soccer Association before adopting its current name in 2005.

When the Australian Soccer Federation was founded in November 1961, Theo Marmaras was elected chairman of the new body, but in a show of personal modesty, he deferred to Seamonds who had been expected to take the post. Marmaras took on the vice-chairmanship role and later acted as Chairman when Seamonds died unexpectedly. He then stepped aside for William Walkley to take over. [3]

Sir William Gaston Walkley CBE was a New Zealand oil company executive. Walkley was a founder of Australian oil company Ampol and was credited with being one of the early pioneers in opening up the northwest of Australia to oil exploration. In 1956 he instituted the Walkley Awards, the premier award for excellence in Australian journalism.

Expansion of the A-League

The Expansion of the A-League is the ongoing process of establishing new clubs in the A-League. The A-League was established to replace the NSL as the top soccer division in the Australian league system and is the only fully professional league in the country. It was founded in 2004 with eight teams commencing competition in 2005 and has since expanded into new markets across Australia and New Zealand. The league is currently contested by 10 teams, although a total of 13 have competed at some stage in its short history.

The Australia Cup was a soccer knockout cup competition in Australia. It was the first national club tournament in the country, initiated in 1962 by the newly formed governing body of the sport, Australian Soccer Federation. The season commenced on 8 October 2015 and concluded on 10 April 2016. The finals series commenced on 15 April 2016 and concluded with the 2016 Grand Final, held on 1 May 2016.
