Hoffman & Associates (formerly PN Hoffman & Associates) [1] is a privately-held [2] real estate development company based in Washington D.C. most known for mixed-use and urban developments. [3] The company has completed approximately seventy developments in the Washington D.C. area, [4] including The Wharf development on D.C.'s Southwest Waterfront. [5] [6] The company's headquarters are in Washington D.C., with a second office in Raleigh, North Carolina. [7]

History

Hoffman & Associates was founded in 1993 as PN Hoffman by current CEO Monty Hoffman and former partner Pete Nazelrod. [8] The company initially produced luxury condos in the D.C. area [8] and incorporated green and sustainable practices into designs. The Alta at Thomas Circle, completed in 2006, was the first LEED-certified residential building in Washington D.C. [4]

During April 2023, it was announced that Mary Beth Avedesian has been appointed as Senior Vice President of Development for the organisation, and will manage several major projects across the region, including the company’s large-scale, community-focused development in Falls Church. [9]

Southwest Waterfront Development

In September 2006, the company was selected to develop the portion of the District's Southwest Waterfront now known as The Wharf. [10] Hoffman ultimately partnered with Madison Marquette to build The Wharf and the first phase of the development opened in October 2017. [11] The Wharf is operated by Hoffman-Madison Waterfront, a joint venture between Hoffman & Associates and Madison Marquette. [12] The second phase of the project is projected to be complete in 2022 and will cover nearly one mile of the waterfront and contain more than 3 million square feet of mixed use space. [13] The total cost of the development is estimated to be $2.5 billion. [14]

As part of the project to redevelop the Southwest Waterfront, Hoffman also redeveloped the historic Riverside Baptist Church [15] and St. Augustine's Church in Southwest D.C. [16] [17]

Additional D.C. Development

In 2014, the company was chosen to build a residential building at The Yards, the 42-acre development on D.C.'s Anacostia River waterfront. The Bower was the first for-sale condominium in The Yards. [18]

In May 2019, the company entered into a partnership with EYA, and Regency Centers to develop a 9.4-acre section of Falls Church, Virginia [14] into mixed-use development. [19] Initially dubbed Little City Commons, the project was later designated as West Falls to better integrate with surrounding developments. The project experienced a slowdown during the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic and ground breaking was planned for sometime in 2021. [20] [21] The site is expected to include 1.4 million square feet of mixed use space and a 99-year lease on the property is expected to bring the city of Falls Church as much as $44.5 million. [22]

Expansion

In December 2018, the company acquired Seaboard Station in downtown Raleigh, North Carolina and is planning a redevelopment of the space valued at $300 million and will open in 2022. [23] [24] In 2019, Hoffman & Associates was selected as the development partner for GoTriangle's Raleigh Union Station Bus Facility project. [25]

The TitanicMemorial is a granite statue in Southwest Waterfront neighborhood of Washington, D.C., that honors the men who gave their lives so that women and children might be saved during the sinking of the Titanic. Ten days after the sinking on April 25, 1912, a group of women formed a committee to raise money for a memorial to honor the sacrifice, with a limit of $1 per person. After sending thousands of cards to other women throughout the U.S., the funds the committee had raised alongside funding from the federal government was enough to complete the project. A competition was announced for a memorial design and several were submitted. The winning design by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, who later opened the Whitney Museum of American Art, became her first major commission.

The Kastles Stadium at The Wharf was a tennis stadium on the Southwest Waterfront in Washington, D.C. Built in 2011, the stadium was the home venue for the Washington Kastles tennis team. The stadium was opened on June 14, 2011, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Billie Jean King, Ilana Kloss, District of Columbia mayor Vincent Gray, and others. The Kastles opened their 2011 season on July 5 at the stadium playing against the Kansas City Explorers.

The Anacostia Riverwalk Trail is a multi-use trail system in Washington, DC, which, when complete, will be ~25 miles long, spanning both sides of the Anacostia River, the Washington Channel waterfront, and projecting into neighborhoods away from the Anacostia. It has more recently been branded as part of a larger Anacostia Riverwalk Trail Network which includes an additional 8 segments and 15 miles of trail. On the north end it connects to the Anacostia Tributary Trail System; on the south end it will connect to the Oxon Hill Farm Trail and on the west it connects to the Rock Creek Park Trail and the 14th Street Bridge. Of the 19 planned segments, 14 are complete for a combined total of 16 miles.

The Convention Center–Southwest Waterfront Line, designated as Route 74, is a daily bus route that is operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority between Walter E. Washington Convention Center and Buzzard Point via 7th Street NW/SW. The line operates every 30 minutes at all times. Trips are roughly 20–30 minutes. This line provides service via Downtown connecting major arenas, the National Mall, and landmarks without having to enter by train. It is a replacement for Metrobus Routes 70 and 71 and the DC Circulator's Convention Center-Southwest Waterfront route.

The District Wharf, commonly known simply as The Wharf, is a multi-billion dollar mixed-use development on the Southwest Waterfront in Washington, D.C. It contains the city's historic Maine Avenue Fish Market, hotels, residential buildings, restaurants, shops, parks, piers, docks and marinas, and live music venues. The first phase of The Wharf opened in October 2017 and the second and final phase was completed in October 2022. The neighborhood encompasses 24 acres of land, 50 acres of water, and contain 3.2 million square feet (300,000 m2) of retail, residential, and entertainment space along 1 mile (1.6 km) of the Potomac River shoreline from the Francis Case Memorial Bridge to Fort McNair.
