Hohokus Township was a township that existed in Bergen County, New Jersey and was established in 1849 from the northern part of Franklin Township and extended from the Saddle River on the east to the western boundary of Bergen County with Passaic County and north to the New York border.
Hohokus Township was first subdivided in 1886 with the creation of Orvil Township on both sides of the Saddle River, consisting of the eastern portion of Hohokus Township and the western portion of Washington Township.
1894's outbreak of "Boroughitis" brought the creation of the Boroughs of Allendale and Upper Saddle River, both of which were created from portions of both Hohokus and Orvil Townships. Next to leave the fold was Ramsey, which was created in 1908.
Hohokus Township ceased to exist on November 7, 1944, when a referendum was passed creating Mahwah Township from the remaining portions of Hohokus Township. [1] [2] [3]

The name "Mahwah" is derived from the Lenape language word "mawewi" which means "Meeting Place" or "Place Where Paths Meet".

This occurred following the development of commuter suburbs in New Jersey, residents of which wanted more government services, whereas the long-time rural population feared the increases in taxation that would result.

Overpeck Township was a township that existed in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States, from 1897 to 1938.
In July 2017, the municipalities of Mahwah, Upper Saddle River, and Montvale in Bergen County, New Jersey, in the United States, opposed extension of an eruv within their borders. An eruv is a land area surrounded by a boundary of religious significance, often marked by small plastic pipes attached to utility poles. The demarcation permits Orthodox Jews to push or carry objects within the eruv on the Jewish Sabbath that otherwise is considered forbidden under Orthodox Jewish law.
Ramsey, New Jersey was incorporated as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 10, 1908, from portions of Hohokus Township. Additional territory was annexed from Waldwick in 1921, and portions of the borough were ceded to Saddle River in 1925.
