Hwata is a Senatorial constituency in the Senate of Zimbabwe. It covers the following parliamentary constituencies in the House of Assembly of Zimbabwe and which are situated in the west of Harare.Hwata is one of six senatorial constituencies in Harare province. This senate seat was named after the Hwata Dynasty which was founded by Shayachimwe in the 19th century.
In the 2008 election, the constituency elected MDC member Rorana Muchihwa as senator. He beat an MDC rival faction member Mavis Musinami, ZANU PF member (and former Mayor of Harare) Charles Tawengwa and independent candidate Kambeve Tinei.
Under the Zimbabwe Youth Council, Hwata has also had Junior Senators in office to meet the administration of its children. In 2013 a Mufakose 1 High student by the name of Jerrial managed to ascend to the position of Hwata Jr Senator after having out done 25 other students from different schools in a public speaking campaign contest. In 2014, after his term of office, it was Allan Chawandika of Highfield 2 High who succeed him after having been outstanding as well in the juniors campaign. The junior senatorial post in 2015 was seized by Takudzwa Falanela of Mufakose 1 High School again who reigned victorious after a fierce public speaking competition in which he contested alongside 28 other prospectives.
Harare, formerly known as Salisbury, is the capital and largest city of Zimbabwe. The city proper has an area of 982.3km2 (378.7 mi2), a population of 1,849,600 as of the 2022 census and an estimated 2,487,209 people in its metropolitan province. The city is situated in north-eastern Zimbabwe in the country's Mashonaland region. Harare is a metropolitan province, which also incorporates the municipalities of Chitungwiza and Epworth. The city sits on a plateau at an elevation of 1,483 metres above sea level, and its climate falls into the subtropical highland category.
Highfield is the second oldest high-density suburb or township in Harare, Zimbabwe built to house Rhodesians of African origin, the first being Mbare. Highfield was founded on what used to be Highfields Farm. It is of historical, cultural and political significance to Zimbabwe and is known as Fiyo in local slang. It is one of the birthplaces of the Zimbabwe African National Union and is home to several prominent people in the country such as Gregy Vambe and Oliver Mtukudzi, and formerly Robert Mugabe.
Paurina Gwanyanya Mpariwa, sometimes written as Paurine Mpariwa, is a member of the Pan-African Parliament from Zimbabwe. Mpariwa is the chair of the Public Accounts Committee.
Tendai Laxton Biti is a Zimbabwean politician who served as Finance Minister of Zimbabwe from 2009 to 2013. He is the second Vice President of Citizens Coalition for Change. He was the Secretary-General of the Movement for Democratic Change and the subsequent Movement for Democratic Change – Tsvangirai (MDC-T) political parties and a Member of Parliament for Harare East until he was expelled from the party and recalled from parliament in mid-2014,before winning the seat again in 2018.
Zimbabwe began experiencing a period of considerable political and economic upheaval in 1999. Opposition to President Mugabe and the ZANU-PF government grew considerably after the mid-1990s in part due to worsening economic and human rights conditions. The Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) was established in September 1999 as an opposition party founded by trade unionist Morgan Tsvangirai.
Patrick Kombayi was a Zimbabwean businessman, a former mayor of Gweru and an active member of the Movement for Democratic Change-Tsvangirai faction in the Midlands Province. He served in the Senate of Zimbabwe for the Chirumhanzu-Gweru senatorial constituency. Kombayi, a student of Robert Mugabe, was the first black train driver in Zimbabwe. He joined Rhodesia Railways after pursuing an unsatisfying career as a schoolteacher. Posted to Zambia, Kombayi became involved with the Zimbabwe African National Union.
Zaka is a Senatorial constituency in the Senate of Zimbabwe. It covers most of the Zaka district in Masvingo Province, and is one of six senatorial constituencies in the province.
The Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) was a Zimbabwean political party organised under the leadership of Morgan Tsvangirai. The MDC was formed in 1999 as an opposition party to President Robert Mugabe's Zimbabwe African National Union – Patriotic Front (Zanu-PF). The MDC was made up of many civic groups who campaigned for the "No" vote in the 2000 constitutional referendum, which would limit a president's service to two terms, before the introduction of a prime minister, as well as giving legal immunities to the state.
The 7th Parliament of Zimbabwe was a meeting of the Zimbabwean Parliament, composed of the Senate and the House of Assembly. It met in Harare over five sessions from 25 August 2008 to 27 June 2013. Its membership was set by the disputed 2008 Zimbabwean general election, which resulted in a ZANU–PF majority in the Senate and Movement for Democratic Change – Tsvangirai control of the House of Assembly. Political negotiations resulted in the 2009 Government of National Unity, a coalition government composed of ZANU–PF, the MDC–T, and the MDC–M.
Harare Metropolitan Province is a province in northeastern Zimbabwe that comprises Harare, the country's capital and largest city, and three other municipalities, Chitungwiza, Epworth and Ruwa. At independence in 1980, it was originally part of Mashonaland Province which in 1983 was divided into three large provinces, Mashonaland Central, Mashonaland East, and Mashonaland West - at this point, the city of Harare became part of Mashonaland East. In 1997, along with Bulawayo, it became a metropolitan province, along with the then two nearby urban settlements. Harare Metropolitan Province is divided into four local government areas - a city council, a municipality and two local boards.
Mufakose Number 2 High School, also known as Mufakose High 2 or Mufakose 2 High School is a secondary school in Zimbabwe which is located in a Harare suburb called Mufakose. Mufakose is to the west of Harare City Centre and lies north of the Harare to Bulawayo railway line. Mufakose Number 2 High School caters for school children aged between 12 and 17 years. This school was established in 1982, immediately after the independence of Zimbabwe in 1980. Use of English language is compulsory at all times whilst within the school grounds.
Mufakose is the totem of the [Zumba] Shona people of central Zimbabwe who settled in the Mazoe valley in the early nineteenth century. Three brothers of Mhofu totem Shayachimwe Mukombami, Nyakudya Chiweshe and Gutsa left their ancestral lands under Nyashanu in Buhera after domestic issues. After settling down in the Harare-Mazoe area.
General elections were held in Zimbabwe on 29 March 2008 to elect the President and Parliament. Because of Zimbabwe's dire economic situation, the elections were expected to provide incumbent President Robert Mugabe with his toughest electoral challenge to date. Mugabe's opponents were critical of the handling of the electoral process, and the government was accused of planning to rig the election. Human Rights Watch said that the election was likely to be "deeply flawed."
Glen View is a high-density suburb that lies on the border of Harare Province and Mashonaland West. It split between the two provinces, with the larger part on Harare’s side and the remainder on Mashonaland West side under their governance of Zvimba Rural District. It is believed to have 160,000(6.4% of Harare’s population) people although the Zimstat says it has on 45,000 people. It shares boundaries with Budiriro on the North (4.341km), Glen Norah on the East(4.0km), South and West being Mashonaland West. It is divided into 8 parts namely Glen View 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 1 Extension and Riverside. It has around 15000 residential stands which ranges from 200sqm to 500sqm with most of them averaging 10 people per house.
Joana Ruvimbo Mamombe is a Zimbabwean politician, former student leader and a member of the Citizens Coalition for Change. In the 2018 Zimbabwean general election she was the youngest Zimbabwean member of parliament, representing Harare West.
Herbert Thomas Gomba is a Zimbabwean politician who served as mayor of Harare from 2018 to 2020. He has been a member of the Harare City Council since 2008 representing Ward 27, which covers parts of the Glen Norah suburb. Gomba was elected and sworn in as mayor on 3 September 2018, but was recalled from the City Council on 14 August 2020 amid factional disputes within the Movement for Democratic Change Alliance. He was reelected to the City Council in a March 2022 by-election as a Citizens Coalition for Change candidate.
Yvonne Musarurwa is a Zimbabwean politician and political rights activist. She is Proportional Representative Member of Parliament and the current National Youth Chairperson of the Movement for Democratic Change Alliance. She is also the chairperson of Environment, Tourism and Climate portfolio of the parliament of Zimbabwe
