Farley is an English name of Anglo-Saxon origin, listed in the Domesday Book of 1086. The name is of variable etymology, in every case deriving from leah, meaning "woodland glade". Adam Farlegh of Somerset was the first of the name to be registered. In the 13th century, Jacob de Farlegh of Wiltshire and Hugh de Farleye of Suffolk were listed in the Hundredorum Rolls. In the following centuries, the Farley family of Somerset pioneered newspaper publishing in provincial England. The Farleys later dispersed across the Anglosphere, largely to Ireland and thereby to America. Prominent Farleys of America include: cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church and Archbishop of New York, John Farley; chairman of the Democratic National Committee and Postmaster General, James Farley; actor and Saturday Night Live comedian, Chris Farley; CEO of the Ford Motor Company, James Farley; and CEO of the New York Stock Exchange, Thomas Farley.
