Theatresports is a form of improvisational theatre, which uses the format of a competition for dramatic effect. Opposing teams can perform scenes based on audience suggestions, with ratings by the audience or by a panel of judges. Developed by director Keith Johnstone in Calgary, Alberta, in 1977, the concept of Theatre sports originated in Johnstone's observations of techniques used in professional wrestling to generate heat, or audience reaction.
In its 17th incarnation the finals occurred at the Ljubljana Slovene National Theatre Drama venue [3] and since the 20th season they have been hosted by Spanish Fighters Culture Centre venue. [4]
The Ljubljana Slovene National Theatre Drama, or the Slovene National Theatre Drama in Ljubljana, is the national theatre in Ljubljana, Slovenia, best known for its conservative repertoire, including classical European dramatic texts and selected contemporary non-commercial European and Slovene ones. Its seat is the Ljubljana Drama Theatre to the southeast of the Slovene Museum of Natural History and southwest of the University of Ljubljana, at 1 Erjavec Street. It is an Art Nouveau building originally of the city's German Theatre.
In early 1990s, the concept of theatresports was introduced in Slovenia by the Ana Monró Theatre, founded in 1980s as the first street theatre group in Titoist Yugoslavia. Nowadays well-known performers, including its co-founder Andrej Rozman – Roza, were among the participants in the league' early years.
Street theatre is a form of theatrical performance and presentation in outdoor public spaces without a specific paying audience. These spaces can be anywhere, including shopping centres, car parks, recreational reserves, college or university campus and street corners. They are especially seen in outdoor spaces where there are large numbers of people. The actors who perform street theatre range from buskers to organised theatre companies or groups that want to experiment with performance spaces, or to promote their mainstream work. It was a source of providing information to people when there were no sources of providing information like television, radio etc. Nowadays, street play is used to convey a message to the crowd watching it. Street play is considered to be the rawest form of acting, because one does not have a microphone or loud speakers.
Since 2005, under Juš Milčinski management, 19 matches were organized throughout each season between the teams, with 80 participants in 2005/2006, fifteen teams in the 2006/2007 season, and 17 teams in the consequent two seasons.
Juš Milčinski is a Slovenian improviser best known for his role in reorganization and revitalization of Impro League in 2005. He is executive producer at international Naked Stage festival of improvisational theatre, and a member of IGLU Theatre team.
