Independent Music New Zealand Incorporated (IMNZ) is a trade body which was set up in 2001 [1] to provide a voice for New Zealand independent record labels and distributors.

IMNZ mainly exists to promote independent labels and their artists; and to act as advocates for changes that may need to be made to the industry that will benefit independent labels.

IMNZ started with about 15 member labels, this had grown to nearly 70 by 2007. Member labels and distributors' artists include such diverse acts as Hollie Smith, Scribe (rapper), Fat Freddy’s Drop, SJD (musician), 8 Foot Sativa, Fly My Pretties, Don McGlashan and many more.

Hollie Smith is a New Zealand soul singer-songwriter based in Wellington. Her debut album Long Player reached number one on the RIANZ albums chart in 2007, and certified double platinum.

Scribe (rapper) New Zealand rapper

Malo Ioane Luafutu, also called Jeshua Ioane Luafutu, and better known by his stage name Scribe, is a New Zealand hip hop rapper and recording artist of Samoan descent. His debut album, The Crusader, was released in 2003 in New Zealand where it has since been certified five times platinum, achieving two number one singles. In 2010, he featured on R&B singer J.Williams single You Got Me which reached number one on the RIANZ charts. In October 2013, Luafutu performed in Mumbai, India, and was dubbed by stunned locals as the "Scrib Dizzler", after performing dance moves on stage that were largely circular in motion.

SJD, or Sean James Donnelly, is a musician from Auckland, New Zealand. His music is a mix of electronica, pop-rock, and soul. The name SJD also refers to Donnelly's touring band when not performing solo.

The organisation is a member of WIN – the World Wide Independent Music Network. This is made up of 27 member countries, with Board members including the heads of the Tommy Boy, Beggars Group, Cooking Vinyl and K7 labels. WIN is also associated with IMPALA, the international independent music producers' overarching trade body.

Tommy Boy Entertainment is an American independent record label founded in 1981 by Tom Silverman. The label is credited with launching the music careers of Queen Latifah, Afrika Bambaataa, Digital Underground, De La Soul, House of Pain, and Naughty By Nature. Tommy Boy is also credited with introducing genres such as EDM, Latin freestyle, and Latin hip hop to mainstream audiences.

Goldschmidt remains the current owner and chairman while Rob Collins holds the position of managing director. The company focuses on artist service based deals where the artist retains ownership of their copyrights

It has been home to many well-known musical acts, including Underoath, Hawk Nelson, Emery, The Almost, FM Static, Family Force 5, and MxPx.

Recorded Music NZ is a non-profit trade association of record producers, distributors and recording artists who sell music in New Zealand. Membership of Recorded Music NZ is open to any recorded music rights owner operating in New Zealand, inclusive of major labels, independent labels and self-released artists. Recorded Music NZ has over 2000 rights holders.

Independent music is music produced independently from commercial record labels or their subsidiaries, a process that may include an autonomous, do-it-yourself approach to recording and publishing. The term indie is sometimes used to describe a genre, and as a genre term, "indie" may include music that is not independently produced, and many independent music artists do not fall into a single, defined musical style or genre and create self-published music that can be categorized into diverse genres. The term ‘indie’ or ‘independent music’ can be traced back to as early as the 1920’s after it was first used to reference independent film companies but was later used as a term to classify an independent band or record producer.

American Association of Independent Music organization

The American Association of Independent Music (A2IM) is a trade association that represents independent record labels in the United States. A2IM is headquartered in New York City. There are also chapters of A2IM located in Nashville, Chicago, Northern California, Southern California, and the Pacific Northwest.

The Australian Independent Record Labels Association is a non profit, non government association dedicated to supporting the growth and development of Australia's independent recording sector. AIR represents Australian owned record labels and independent artists based in Australia.

The Cartel was a co-operative record distribution organisation in the United Kingdom, set up by a number of small independent record labels to handle their distribution to record shops. Pooling their resources in this way allowed them to compete with the larger distribution operations of the major record labels, and also to gain access to the larger shop chains.


The AIR Charts are the official sales charts for Australian independent music released by Australian owned, independent record labels. Presented by AIR, the Australian Independent Record Labels Association, the charts are calculated according to official sales figures provided by the ARIA Charts, which includes legal MP3 download sales.
