Institute of Marine Sciences (IMS) is an institute of Chittagong University in Bangladesh. [1] It was originally established as the Department of Marine Biology and Oceanography in 1971 and under the Canadian Technical Assistance Program, later included in the development scheme of the university under the Fourth Five-year Plan of Bangladesh. In 1983, it was turned into the Institute of Marine Sciences. It trains people in marine science and its related disciplines, researches on marine, brackish and related environments and their resources, provides assistance to the government on maritime issues, publishes books and journals on marine science, and disseminates technology on marine science to the stakeholders.

In 1996, the M.Sc. in marine science degree program at the institute has been diversified by introducing six specializations, namely,

1. Fisheries

2.Aquaculture

3. Oceanography

4.Fish Nutrition & Feed Technology

5. Post-harvest Technology

6. Marine Pollution

In 2011, the Institute launched the country's first B.Sc. (Honours) in oceanography degree program, and in 2012, B.Sc. in fisheries (honours) program. Now the institute has upgraded to a faculty.

Bangladesh being a first line littoral state of the Indian Ocean has a very good source of marine resources in the Bay of Bengal. The country has an exclusive economic zone of 41,000 square miles (110,000 km2), which is 73% of the country's land area. On the other hand, Bangladesh is a small and developing country overloaded with almost unbearable pressure of human population. In the past, people of Bangladesh were mostly dependent upon land-based proteins. But, the continuous process of industrialisation and urbanisation consumes the limited land area. Now there is no other way than to harvest the vast under water protein from the Bay of Bengal, which can meet the country's demand.

Oscar Elton Sette American fisheries scientist

Oscar Elton Sette, who preferred to be called Elton Sette, was an influential 20th-century American fisheries scientist. During a five-decade career with the United States Bureau of Fisheries, United States Fish and Wildlife Service and its Bureau of Commercial Fisheries, and the National Marine Fisheries Service, Sette pioneered the integration of fisheries science with the sciences of oceanography and meteorology to develop a complete understanding of the physical and biological characteristics of the ocean environment and the effects of those characteristics on fisheries and fluctuations in the abundance of fish. He is recognized both in the United States and internationally for many significant contributions he made to marine fisheries research and for his leadership in the maturation of fisheries science to encompass fisheries oceanography, defined as the "appraisal or exploitation of any kind of [marine] organism useful to Man" and "the study of oceanic processes affecting the abundance and availability of commercial fishes." Many fisheries scientists consider him to be the "father of modern fisheries science."
