The Institute of Social Sciences, Agra (ISS), is an institute of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar University (formerly Agra University), Agra, India.
The institute is situated within the heart of the city at University campus. The Institute of Social Sciences came into existence in 1955 and was headed by Prof. Desh Raj, Prof.B.P.Adhikari, Prof. D.D.Joshi (Later, Pro-Vice Chancellor, IGNOU, New Delhi) and Prof. V.K.Sethi. It has been approved by the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India, the U.P. Government. Prof Diwakar Khare is the Director.

The Department of Statistics is one of the oldest departments of statistics in India. It was established in 1956 under the headship of statistician and sampling expert Prof. Deshraj. The department conducts research work including sample survey, design of experiment, and information theory. The department was started with the introduction of M.Stat course in 1956. M.Stat course includes papers of pure Statistics, Applied Statistics, Pure mathematics, and Operation research and computer science. The course includes project work that provides training in data collection, compilation, statistical analysis and report writing using advanced multivariate techniques of statistics.
In 1987 the department began an M.Phil course in Statistics covering the areas of theoretical and applied Statistics at the specialization level. The department also offers Ph.D and D.Sc. programme in Statistics The main areas of research are sample surveys, design of experiment, statistical inference, Bayesian Inference, Population studies, Biostatistics, Econometric, Data mining, Operation research, marketing and business Statistics. The department has contributed pioneering work particularly in the field of Information Theory, Design of Experiments, Econometrics, Statistical Inference, Survey sampling, Stylometry and Social Mobility. The department has organized many an international seminars and conferences on Mathematical Statistics, Software Applications and Computational Techniques. A large numbers of pass outs of the department are holding key posts in government departments, private sectors, research institutes, Universities and College teaching in India and abroad as well.

The admission procedure for the above courses starts in June every year.
The department of Sociology came into existence in the year 1955 as an integral part of the Institute of Social Sciences. It was aimed to impart postgraduate teaching and research in Sociology along with social work and social psychology. However, the social work course became and independent or separate department in 1983. Distinguished sociologist of international repute like Prof. Yogendra Singh, Prof. D.N.Dhanagra, Prof. Yogesh Atal, Prof. Indra Dev, Prof. R.N.Saxena, Prof. P.K.Srivastava, Prof. S.L.Sharma and Prof. S.V.Pande had been members of the department.

Students are trained on programming languages according to their need. Social science students use statistical techniques in their research through statistical software.
The library has more than 30,000 books on Statistics, Computer Science, Sociology and social work. Besides the ISS library, statistics books are available from the central library of the university.
James Joseph Heckman is a Nobel Prize winning American economist who is currently at the University of Chicago, where he is The Henry Schultz Distinguished Service Professor in Economics and the College; Professor at the Harris School of Public Policy; Director of the Center for the Economics of Human Development (CEHD); and Co-Director of Human Capital and Economic Opportunity (HCEO) Global Working Group. He is also Professor of Law at the Law School, a senior research fellow at the American Bar Foundation, and a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. In 2000, Heckman shared the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences with Daniel McFadden, for his pioneering work in econometrics and microeconomics. As of December 2020, according to RePEc, he is the second most influential economist in the world.
Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis OBE, FNA, FASc, FRS was an Indian scientist and statistician. He is best remembered for the Mahalanobis distance, a statistical measure, and for being one of the members of the first Planning Commission of free India. He made pioneering studies in anthropometry in India. He founded the Indian Statistical Institute, and contributed to the design of large-scale sample surveys. For his contributions, Mahalanobis has been considered the father of modern statistics in India.
The Indian Agricultural Statistics Research Institute is an institute under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) with the mandate for developing new techniques for the design of agricultural experiments as well as to analyze data in agriculture. The institute is affiliated with and is located in the campus of the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, a deemed university, at Pusa in New Delhi. The institute includes sections that specialize in statistical techniques for animal and plant breeding, bioinformatics, sampling, experimental design, modelling and forecasting.
Trygve Magnus Haavelmo, born in Skedsmo, Norway, was an economist whose research interests centered on econometrics. He received the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 1989.
Calyampudi Radhakrishna Rao FRS known as C. R. Rao is an Indian-American mathematician and statistician. He is currently professor emeritus at Pennsylvania State University and Research Professor at the University at Buffalo. Rao has been honoured by numerous colloquia, honorary degrees, and festschrifts and was awarded the US National Medal of Science in 2002. The American Statistical Association has described him as "a living legend whose work has influenced not just statistics, but has had far reaching implications for fields as varied as economics, genetics, anthropology, geology, national planning, demography, biometry, and medicine." The Times of India listed Rao as one of the top 10 Indian scientists of all time. Rao is also a Senior Policy and Statistics advisor for the Indian Heart Association non-profit focused on raising South Asian cardiovascular disease awareness.
Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) is a higher education and research institute which is recognized as an Institute of National Importance by the 1959 act of the Indian parliament. It grew out of the Statistical Laboratory set up by Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis in Presidency College, Kolkata. Established in 1931, this unique institution of India is one of the oldest institutions focused on statistics, and its early reputation led it to being adopted as a model for the first US institute of Statistics set up at the Research Triangle, North Carolina by Gertrude Mary Cox.

Assam Engineering College, established in 1955, is located in Guwahati. It is the first engineering college of Assam which is a state of India affiliated to Assam Science and Technology University. AEC has been the hub of many academic and supplementary activities in Assam. It is a public college run by the state of Assam. He was a distinguished mathematical statistician whose wide-ranging research included the analysis of martingale inequalities, Markov processes, de Finetti's theorem, consistency of Bayes estimators, sampling, the bootstrap, and procedures for testing and evaluating models. He published extensively on methods for causal inference and the behavior of standard statistical models under non-standard conditions – for example, how regression models behave when fitted to data from randomized experiments. Freedman also wrote widely on the application—and misapplication—of statistics in the social sciences, including epidemiology, public policy, and law.

Bhagavatula Lakshmi Surya Prakasa Rao is an Indian statistician. He was born on 6 October 1942 in Porumamilla, Andhra Pradesh. He completed his B.A. (Honours) course in Mathematics from Andhra University in 1960 and moved to the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, where he completed his M.Stat in Statistics in 1962. He graduated with a Ph.D in Statistics in 1966 from Michigan State University under Herman Rubin. He won the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology in Mathematical Science in 1982 and the Outstanding Alumni award from Michigan State University in 1996. He is an elected Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (1983), Indian National Science Academy (1984), Indian Academy of Sciences (1992), and National Academy of Sciences (1993).

Dipak Kumar Dey is an Indian-American statistician best known for his work on Bayesian methodologies. He is currently the Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor in the Department of Statistics at the University of Connecticut. Dey has an international reputation as a statistician as well as a data scientist. Since he earned a Ph.D. degree in statistics from Purdue University in 1980, Dey has made tremendous contributions to the development of modern statistics, especially in Bayesian analysis, decision science and model selection. Dey has published more than 10 books and edited volumes, and over 260 research articles in peer-refereed national and international journals. In addition, the statistical methodologies that he has developed has found wide applications in a plethora of interdisciplinary and applied fields, such as biometry and bioinformatics, genetics, econometrics, environmental science, and social science. Dey has supervised 40 Ph.D. students, and presented more than 200 professional talks in colloquia, seminars and conferences all over the world. During his career, Dey has been a visiting professor or scholar at many institutions or research centers around the world, such as Macquarie University, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile,, University of São Paulo, University of British Columbia, Statistical and Applied Mathematical Sciences Institute, etc. Dey is an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Statistical Association, the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, the International Society for Bayesian Analysis and the International Statistical Institute.
Anthony Lancaster is a British-American Bayesian econometrician. He is the Herbert H. Goldberger Professor emeritus at Brown University and has been a fellow of the Econometric Society since 1991.
