Instituto Sacatar is a Brazilian non-profit arts foundation based in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, which sponsors artistic fellowships/residencies for creative individuals of all disciplines, ages and nationalities. [1]

Founded in 2001, Sacatar supports artists from Brazil and abroad through fully funded, time-based residencies focused on artistic research, creation, and cultural exchange.

Sacatar hosts artists working across disciplines, including visual arts, performance, dance, music, literature, film, and interdisciplinary practices. The program emphasizes dialogue with local cultural contexts, particularly Afro-Brazilian histories and contemporary artistic practices in Bahia.

Residency Program

Sacatar’s core program consists of residencies lasting approximately eight weeks. Selected artists receive accommodation, meals, studio space, and logistical support. Residencies are awarded through regular open calls as well as through partnerships with other cultural institutions and funding bodies.

Artists are encouraged—but not required—to engage with local communities, cultural institutions, and fellow artists in Salvador and the wider Recôncavo Baiano region. Public programs such as open studios, talks, and performances are periodically organized.

Location

The residency is located on Itaparica Island, across the Bay of All Saints from Salvador, Bahia’s capital. The site includes individual bedroom suites, studios, communal spaces, and outdoor areas integrated into the island’s coastal and tropical environment.

Partnerships and Programs

Instituto Sacatar maintains partnerships with Brazilian and international organizations, including cultural institutes, universities, foundations, and government agencies.

Governance and Funding

Instituto Sacatar operates as a Brazilian non-profit organization. Its activities are supported through a combination of private philanthropy (its main supporter is the US-based Sacatar Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit), institutional partnerships, and public and private grants.

Legacy and Impact

Sacatar is widely regarded as one of the longest-running and most prominent international artist residencies in Latin America. Alumni include artists who have gone on to exhibit and perform at major international institutions, biennials, and festivals.
