The Irish Professional Photographers and Videographers Association is a non-profit association for professional photographers and videographers. In spite of the name, membership is not limited to Ireland.
The Irish Professional Photographers and Videographers Association (IPPVA) is the network for qualified professional photographers and videographers throughout Ireland, and beyond.
The Irish Professional Photographers and Videographers Association (IPPVA) was founded in 1949 as the Irish Professional Photographers Association (IPPA), making it the longest-established professional photography and videography association in Ireland. It was created to support and represent professional photographers in Ireland, providing a platform for collaboration, education, and industry standards. In response to the evolution of the industry and the increasing prominence of videography, the association rebranded as the IPPVA in 2018, incorporating professional videographers into its membership.
Early Years (1949–1970s)
The IPPA was established by a group of leading Irish photographers who sought to create a unified body to set professional standards and advocate for the interests of the industry. In its early years, the association focused on defining best practices, facilitating networking among photographers, and organising exhibitions to promote the craft. Membership grew steadily, attracting photographers from various disciplines, including portrait, commercial, and documentary photography. Expansion and Professional Development (1980s–2000s)
During the 1980s and 1990s, the IPPA expanded its scope by offering professional development opportunities, including workshops, seminars, and mentorship programs. The association also introduced a qualification system to recognize excellence within the profession, with designations such as Licentiate, Associate, and Fellow awarded to members demonstrating high levels of skill and professionalism.
Digital Revolution and Inclusion of Videography (2000s–2010s)
The rise of digital technology in the early 2000s brought significant changes to the photography and videography industries. The IPPA adapted by incorporating digital photography training into its programs and providing guidance on emerging technologies. Recognising the increasing overlap between photography and videography, the association officially rebranded as the Irish Professional Photographers and Videographers Association (IPPVA) in 2018, reflecting its commitment to supporting professionals across both disciplines.
Recent Developments and Industry Leadership (2020s–Present)
In recent years, the IPPVA has strengthened its role as a leading authority in the Irish visual media industry. It continues to provide professional accreditation, promote ethical business practices, and support members through education, advocacy, and networking. The association organises annual awards to celebrate excellence in photography and videography across various categories, further elevating industry standards.
The IPPVA remains dedicated to fostering a thriving community of photographers and videographers, adapting to technological advancements and evolving industry needs while maintaining its commitment to professionalism and artistic excellence.
As of 2025, it has over 200 members. It is a member of the Federation of European Professional Photographers and the World Council of Professional Photographers.
