Lithuania, officially the Republic of Lithuania, is a country in the Baltic region of Europe. Lithuania is considered to be one of the Baltic states. The country is situated along the southeastern shore of the Baltic Sea, to the east of Sweden and Denmark. It is bordered by Latvia to the north, Belarus to the east and south, Poland to the south, and Kaliningrad Oblast to the southwest. Lithuania competed at the Summer Olympic Games for the first time at the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris, France. On Olympic application Lithuania listed seven sports, but sent athletes only for football and cycling.

Lithuania competed at the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam, Netherlands. After the disappointing debut in the 1924 Summer Olympics, Lithuania was better prepared for the games in Amsterdam. In 1926 it organized the first national Olympics. Lithuania sent 12 athletes to compete in 4 sports: athletics, boxing, cycling, and weightlifting. The best result was achieved by boxer Juozas Vinča, who shared 5th–8th places. Lithuania did not appear in the Olympics again until 1992.

The first Baltic Chess Congress took place in Riga, Latvia, in 1899. The winner was Robert Behting, the elder brother of Kārlis Bētiņš, who won a play-off game with Karl Wilhelm Rosenkrantz. The second Baltic Chess Congress was played in Dorpat, Estonia, in 1901. There were four winners.

Isakas Anolikas Lithuanian racing cyclist

Isakas Anolikas (1903–1943) was a Lithuanian cyclist. Anolikas was part of the Makabi sport club, established in 1920. He represented Lithuania at the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris and at the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam. Both times he did not finish the individual time trial over 188 km due to technical malfunctions. Anolikas was Lithuanian champion: in 1925 and 1926 he won individual 10 km race, in 1926 he won gold in team 70 km race. He was killed during the Holocaust: as a Jew, he was shot at the Ninth Fort in Kaunas.

The Lithuanian Sports Club Makabi is a sports club of the Jewish minority in Lithuania. It is one of the many Maccabi sports clubs worldwide. It was originally established on September 19, 1920 in Kaunas. It ceased to exist during the Holocaust in Lithuania and was reestablished only in 1989 during the perestroika in the Lithuanian SSR. The club participates in the Maccabiah Games. It had about 500 members in 1990 and 200 in 2000. As of 2014, the club supported nine sports.
