Southern Conference football teams compete in the Football Championship Subdivision. Prior to that JSU played in the OVC. The Gamecocks are currently led by head coach Jana McGinnis. Coach McGinnis played basketball at JSU from 1987-1990. Assistant coaches are Mark Wisener and Julie Boland. The team plays its home games at University Field located on the university's campus. The Gamecocks reached the NCAA Super Regionals in 2009. The Gamecocks beat the University of Tennessee to advance.

They lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to Auburn.

Jacksonville State defeated Central Arkansas and finished with the best record, remaining unbeaten in conference play. Jacksonville State declared themselves conference champions after the game.

They finished the season with 26–9, 15–3 in ASUN play to earn a share of the regular season championship. As the No. 1 seed in the ASUN tournament, the Owls defeated Queens, Lipscomb, and Liberty to win the tournament championship. As a result, they received the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, the school's first-ever trip to the tournament. As the No. 14 seed in the Midwest region, they lost in the first round to Xavier.
