Jacob's Ladder is an outdoor staircase in Perth, Western Australia. [1] [2] Consisting of 242 concrete steps, the staircase links the north-east corner of King's Park with the Swan River, though it is not part of Kings Park itself. Beginning at the top end of Cliff Street and leading down to Mounts Bay Road, Jacob's Ladder is a popular site for Perth residents to exercise. [2]
Originally known as Cliff Street Stairway, it was originally constructed in 1909 as a straight staircase of 274 jarrah steps as a cheaper alternative to a road for Mount Eliza residents to reach the river. According to legend, it acquired its current name from a local real estate agent who placed a sign at the base of the staircase, in reference to both the Bible story about a ladder to heaven and the stunning views at the top of the structure. [1] The original wooden structure was closed and demolished in 1961 due to safety concerns and replaced by the winding concrete staircase still in use today. [1]
According to legend, Herb Elliott trained on the original timber version of Jacob's Ladder before it was replaced by its current concrete and metal version. [2]
The staircase was closed for three months after being damaged by a landslide during a storm on 22 March 2010. [3] [4] It re-opened on 21 June 2010, after repairs. [5]
In November 2023, the staircase was closed for three weeks after a deliberately-lit bushfire caused some minor structural damage. [6]
The staircase's enduring popularity with joggers has led to complaints from some nearby residents over noise and inconsiderate behaviour. [7] [8]
Bethnal Green is a London Underground station in Bethnal Green, London, England, served by the Central line. It lies between Liverpool Street and Mile End stations, is in Travelcard Zone 2, and is open 24 hours on a Friday and Saturday as part of the Night Tube service. The station was opened as part of the long planned Central line eastern extension on 4 December 1946, having previously been used as an air-raid shelter. On 3 March 1943, 173 people, including 62 children, were killed in a crush while attempting to enter the shelter, in what is believed to be the largest loss of civilian life in the UK during the Second World War.

Butler railway station is a commuter railway station in Butler, Western Australia, a suburb of Perth. It is the terminus of the Joondalup line, which is on the Transperth commuter rail network. Planning for the Joondalup line in the Butler area began in the late 1990s. The station was built as part of a A$240 million extension of the Joondalup line from Clarkson to Butler. Construction began on the station on 16 July 2012, and was completed on 16 May 2014, opening on 21 September 2014. In 2024, an extension of the Joondalup line from Butler to Yanchep will open.

The 2021 Beechina bushfire was a bushfire that began on 26 December 2021 in Beechina, 46 kilometres east-north-east of the Perth central business district, in the Shire of Mundaring, Western Australia. The bushfire began less than five kilometres from the 2021 Wooroloo bushfire, and coincided with a COVID-19 outbreak and associated public health measures in the Perth metropolitan region. One house was destroyed as a result of the fire, along with six outbuildings and a number of vehicles.
