Jane Fonda's Workout Book is a nonfiction book about exercise written by actress Jane Fonda. It was published in 1981 and made the top five on the New York Times nonfiction hardback bestseller list. [1] A workout video was made from the book: Jane Fonda's Workout . [2] It was also adapted into an album.

With the goal of preventing illness and promoting physical fitness, practitioners perform various routines comprising a number of different dance-like exercises. Francois Henri "Jack" LaLanne was an American fitness and nutrition guru and motivational speaker. He described himself as being a "sugarholic" and a "junk food junkie" until he was age 15. He also had behavioral problems, but "turned his life around" after listening to a public lecture about the benefits of good nutrition by health food pioneer Paul Bragg. During his career, he came to believe that the country's overall health depended on the health of its population, and referred to physical culture and nutrition as "the salvation of America".

Derrick Errol Evans, better known as "Mr Motivator", is a Jamaican-born British fitness instructor. He rose to fame in 1993 through appearances on the UK breakfast television show GMTV, where he performed live fitness sessions and offered tips and advice to viewers. Mr Motivator would often perform these workout sessions live before Power Rangers would air as part of GMTV programming. Mr Motivator mostly wore tight fitting and very colourful spandex outfits for his fitness sessions. In response to the popularity of his fitness sessions, he released a number of fitness and workout videos in the 1990s.

Kathy Smith is a personal trainer who became well known for her workout videos during the late 1980s and 1990s. She has sold over 16 million workout videos since 1980. "Gym and Tonic" is a single released by British production duo Spacedust. The song was originally recorded by French record producer Bob Sinclar as "Gym Tonic", with co-production by Thomas Bangalter and a 12-minute section of improvised funk by James Andrew (Gym) Dakin. The track was included on Sinclar's album Paradise. Their version sampled "Arms", a workout recording by American actress Jane Fonda. However, Fonda refused clearance of her vocals being used as a sample, which eventually led to a single never being released. When Spacedust recorded their version of the track, the Fonda vocal samples were re-recorded with a session vocalist.

Jane Fonda's Workout, also known as Workout Starring Jane Fonda, was a 1982 exercise video by 44-year-old actress Jane Fonda, based on her best-selling book Jane Fonda's Workout Book (1981). The VHS release by Karl Home Video was aimed primarily at women as a way to exercise at home. The video sold very well, and Fonda released further videos throughout the 1980s and into 1995 to create a series. The video also increased the sales of VHS playback units, as this was often the first video tape bought by a customer. The original 1982 Jane Fonda's Workout was the first non-theatrical home video release to top sales charts, and it became the top-selling VHS tape of all time. In total, Fonda sold 17 million tapes in the series, considered an enormous success. Fonda's success spawned imitators and sparked a boom of women's exercise classes, breaking open the formerly male-dominated fitness industry, and establishing the celebrity-as-fitness-instructor model. The ballet-style leg warmers she wore increased the popularity of an ongoing fashion trend, and her encouraging shout, "Feel the burn!", became a common saying, along with "No pain, no gain."
