John Daniel George (September 16,1928 - December 10,1988) was a Californian politician and the first African American elected to the Alameda County Board of Supervisors. George served as supervisor for the Alameda County's District 5 for over ten years from December 1976 to January 1989. [1]
A psychiatric hospital administered by Alameda Health System,formerly known as Alameda County Medical Center,John George Psychiatric Pavilion opened in 1992 and was named after George to honor his advocacy for the mentally ill. It has since been rebranded as John George Psychiatric Hospital [2] George had stated "My people [African Americans] were the first laboratory animals in America." In October 1989 a Democratic Party club was formed and also named after George,the John George Democratic Club [3] whose goals are "In his memory and in an effort to keep his voice and vision alive in the Democratic Party."
George is described as the leading proponent of the health care,welfare,and workers' rights of all County citizens,an early activist in the struggle for civil rights and affirmative action and a long-time leader in the local Anti-Apartheid Movement. [4]

Carola Blitzman Eisenberg was an Argentine-American psychiatrist who became the first woman to hold the position of Dean of Students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. From 1978 to 1990,she was the dean of student affairs at Harvard Medical School (HMS). She was a long-time lecturer in the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at HMS. She was also both a founding member of Physicians for Human Rights and an honorary psychiatrist with the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. After retiring,she was involved in human rights work through Physicians for Human Rights,the Institute for Healthcare Improvement,and elsewhere. She turned 100 in September 2017 and died in Lincoln,Massachusetts,in March 2021 at the age of 103.
Wilma Chan was an American politician in California serving on the Alameda County Board of Supervisors. A Democrat,she served in the California State Assembly from 2000 to 2006 before being termed out,representing the 16th District,which at the time included Oakland,Alameda,and Piedmont. She served as Assembly Majority Whip from 2001 to 2002 and from 2002 to 2004 as Assembly Majority Leader,the first woman and the first Asian American to hold the position. In 2008,Chan lost a Democratic Party primary election for the California State Senate District 9 seat.
David M. McDowell (1963–2014) was an American psychiatrist,author and creative consultant. He co-founded the Substance Treatment and Research Service at Columbia University and served as its medical director. He also founded Columbia's Buprenorphine Program,the first such treatment program for opiate addiction in the United States,which according to The New York Times had an 88% success rate. His scholarly work has focused on co-occurring psychiatric disorders and substance abuse problems,particularly club drugs and marijuana. McDowell's book Substance Abuse:From Principles to Practice,is one of the more highly regarded and accessible books on the subject,and is excerpted in the American Psychiatric Association's textbook on substance abuse treatment.
