John Lawrence (musician)

John Lawrence (born 17 July 1975) is a Welsh musician. He was a founding member of Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, but left the band in 1999, prior to the release of the band's sixth album Spanish Dance Troupe . [1] As a solo artist, he has sometimes gone by the name Infinity Chimps. [1]

In early 2011, Lawrence recorded a session for Adam Walton on BBC Introducing, backed by the then-new band Shy and the Fight. [2]

In 2013, he released new material in collaboration with singer Jaci Williams. [3] He has also been producing Tree of Wolves's material. [4]

Lawrence produced folk musician Chris Jones's debut album, Dacw'r Tannau, released in September 2014. [5] He has also worked with Band Pres Llareggub on their first EP, which was released in April 2015, [6] [ unreliable source? ] and with Nia Morgan on her upcoming new album. Lawrence released solo material, Songs from the Precipice, on 7 September 2015 via his website, [8] followed by Narcissus Paradox in 2019. His style on later output has been likened to Frank Zappa. [9] He makes occasional public appearances, including 9 Volt Sessions (twice, 4 September 2014 and 29 June 2015) and also a live session on Neil Crud's Tudno FM radio show on 20 June 2016. [10]

In 2017, he produced Welsh singer-songwriter, Scott Marsden's solo EP Scars at Penhesgyn Studio, where he continues to work as the in-house engineer with former Bryn Derwen Studio owner, Laurie Gane.

In 2021 He continued to work with Welsh singer-songwriter Scott Marsden on Holy Coves' third studio album titled Druids and Bards, working with producers and musicians Erik Wofford, Owain Ginsberg, Spike T. Smith and Jason Hughes. Lawrence produced, engineered and featured on guitar on the record. The album is due to be released in 2022 via Welsh independent record label Yr Wyddfa Records based in Snowdonia.

Ankst

Ankst was a Welsh independent record label formed in 1988 at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth by Alun Llwyd, Gruffudd Jones and Emyr Glyn Williams. After a handful of low key cassette releases, the label relocated to Cardiff and became a more serious concern, providing a launch-pad for several popular Welsh artists, including Llwybr Llaethog, Super Furry Animals and Gorky's Zygotic Mynci. The Rough Guide to Wales described Ankst as "one of the most prolific, eclectic and innovative" of the 1990s Welsh music labels.

Gorkys Zygotic Mynci

Gorky's Zygotic Mynci were a psychedelic folk and alternative rock band which formed in Carmarthen, Wales, in 1991. The group performed music in both Welsh and English, and they had eight Top 75 singles on the UK Singles Chart during their career. They were prominent during the era known as Cool Cymru. The group disbanded in May 2006.

Alan Holmes

Alan Holmes is a musician, artist and record producer, based in north Wales. Although he began his musical career in the late 1960s in childhood beat group The Insects, he first came to prominence in The Zuggs, followed by A Silly Tree, the latter including Gary Stubbs, later of Cut Tunes with whom Holmes also served. Holmes was responsible for the cult psychedelic band The Pinecones and by the mid-1980s he was a key member of Reinheitsgebot, Third Spain and The Lungs.

Datblygu

Datblygu were a Welsh experimental rock group formed in 1982. They are regarded as a catalyst of the new wave of Welsh rock in the early 1980s.

The album was the last to feature founder member John Lawrence, who had departed the band by the time the album was released.

Euros Childs Musical artist

Euros Childs is a Welsh musician and songwriter, perhaps best known as the frontman for the band Gorky's Zygotic Mynci and—as of January 2019—the keyboardist for Teenage Fanclub. His sister, violinist Megan Childs, was also a member of Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, and their father Lynn played on some Gorky's recordings, most notably on Barafundle. Childs was born in Freshwater East, Pembrokeshire, and was educated at the Welsh-medium school Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bro Myrddin in Carmarthenshire.

Richard James (musician) Musical artist

Richard James is a guitarist, bassist and singer-songwriter originally from Carmarthen, Wales. He was a founding member of the band Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, who split up in 2006. He performs and records as a solo artist, and as part of the bands Pen Pastwn and Locus.

Anweledig

Anweledig are a band from Blaenau Ffestiniog, Wales; their style is a mixture of funk, reggae, ska and rock. The band consists of Ceri Cunnington (vocals), Gai Toms (guitar/vocals), Iwan 'Oz' Jones (guitar), Rhys Roberts, Alwyn Evans (drums), Joe Buckley (keyboard), Edwin Humphreys (saxophone), Barri Gwilliam (trumpet) and Arwel Davies (trombone).

Gorwel Owen is a Welsh producer and musician. Bwyd Time is the third full album by Gorky's Zygotic Mynci. It was released in 1995 and was the band's last album for Ankst. It features, amongst others, Anthony Saffery from Cornershop, who plays sitar on several tracks.

Cate Le Bon Welsh musician and producer

Cate Le Bon is a Welsh musician and record producer. She sings in both English and Welsh. She has released six solo studio albums, three EPs and a number of singles. Le Bon has toured with artists such as St. Vincent, Perfume Genius and John Grant.

Zabrinski were an alternative rock band from Carmarthen and Cardiff, Wales. They formed in the late 1990s and released four albums before splitting up in 2007.

Sweet Baboo is the stage name of Stephen Black, a musician from rural North Wales now based in Cardiff. Before becoming a solo artist, he played with the band JT MOuse. Alongside his solo work, he has also played with many other artists, including with Gruff Rhys, Cate Le Bon, Euros Childs, Piney Gir and Slow Club. He is bilingual in Welsh and English but usually sings in English.
