The Joint Functional Component Command for Space (JFCC SPACE) was a component of U.S. Strategic Command. The Command was established on 19 July 2006, and activated on 12 September 2006, [1] under the command of General William L. Shelton. The JFCC SPACE is headquartered at Vandenberg AFB, California, and was formed from the division of Joint Functional Component Command for Space and Global Strike (JFCC SGS) into two separate commands, JFCC SPACE and Joint Functional Component Command for Global Strike and Integration (JFCC GSI). It was inactivated on 1 December 2017 when it was replaced by the Joint Force Space Component. [2]

William L. Shelton US Air Force general

William Lee Shelton is a former United States Air Force four-star general who last served as the commander of Air Force Space Command from January 5, 2011 to August 15, 2014. He had been the Assistant Vice Chief of Staff of the United States Air Force and Air Staff Director. He had served as Chief of Warfighting Integration and Chief Information Officer, Office of the Secretary of the Air Force. Shelton held numerous positions of leadership throughout the United States Air Force. He retired from the Air Force on September 1, 2014.

Joint Functional Component Command for Space and Global Strike was a component of the United States Strategic Command. It was headquartered at Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska. The Commander, JFCC SGS was dual hatted as the Commander, Eighth Air Force and Commander, JFCC SGS. On 19 July 2006, JFCC SGS was reorganized into two separate JFCCs: Joint Functional Component Command for Global Strike and Integration and Joint Functional Component Command for Space. The Commander of JFCC SGS at the time of the reorganization was Lieutenant General Robert J. Elder, Jr., USAF, who became the new Commander of JFCC-GSI.

CDR JFCC SPACE is also the Commander of Fourteenth Air Force (Air Force Space Command). While the Implementation Directive was signed 19 July, the JFCC SPACE activation ceremony was held 12 September 2006 at Vandenberg AFB, CA. Gen James E. Cartwright (CDRUSSTRATCOM) presided over the ceremony where he presented the JFCC SPACE colors to Maj Gen William L. Shelton. [3]

On April 4, 2017, Joint Functional Component Command for Space was renamed National Space Defense Center, "so that everybody can understand finally what it is,” as STRATCOM Chief, General John Hyten, put it. [4]

On December 1, 2017, Joint Functional Component Command for Space was inactivated, restructured and reorganized as Joint Force Space Component command under USSTRATCOM. [5]

Mission

According to Gen Shelton, "Our prime mission directive in JFCC SPACE is to ensure our freedom of action in space, while preventing adversary use of space against us." [1] To do this, the component optimizes planning, execution, and force management, as directed by the commander of USSTRATCOM, of the assigned missions of coordinating, planning, and conducting space operations. [6]

JFCC SPACE's responsibilities include the United States Space Surveillance Network. [7]

The United States Space Surveillance Network detects, tracks, catalogs and identifies artificial objects orbiting Earth, e.g. active/inactive satellites, spent rocket bodies, or fragmentation debris. The system is the responsibility of the Joint Functional Component Command for Space, part of the United States Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM).

614th Space Operations Squadron

The 614th Space Operations Squadron was a squadron of the United States Air Force (USAF) under Air Force Space Command (AFSPC). By AFSPC order the unit inactivated 24 May 2007. Its mission and members moved to the Combat Operations Division of the 614th Air and Space Operations Center. The inactivation was part of the larger USAF plan to implement the Numbered Air Force-Component structure. The unit's members became the plankholders of the 614th Air and Space Operations Center and the Joint Space Operations Center.

614th Air and Space Operations Center

The 614th Air and Space Operations Center is a United States Air Force operations center. It is a subordinate unit of the Fourteenth Air Force / (Air Forces Strategic and Air Force Space Command. Its mission is to "To defend the United States and its Allies through the creation of space situational awareness and the command and control of joint space operations on behalf of CDR JFCC SPACE." Per AFSPC special order, 614 AOC was redesignated from the 614th Space Operations Group effective 24 May 2007; the ceremony to redesignate was held outside the 14 AF headquarters building, 18 June 2007, at Vandenberg AFB, CA.

Combined Space Operations Center

The Combined Space Operations Center (CSpOC) is a command and control (C2) weapon system focused on planning and executing US Strategic Command's Joint Functional Component Command for Space mission. The purpose of the CSpOC is to provide a focal point for the operational employment of worldwide joint space forces, and enable the Commander of JFCC SPACE to integrate space power into global military operations. The CSpOC is located at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, and is the organization responsible for performing all of the orbit determination activity necessary to maintain the US space catalogue.

The Joint Force Air Component Commander (JFACC), formerly the Joint Functional Component Command for Global Strike and Integration (JFCC-GSI), is a component of US Strategic Command. 18th Space Control Squadron

The United States Air Force's 18th Space Control Squadron is a space control unit located at Vandenberg AFB, California. Reactivated in 2016, the 18th SPCS is tasked with providing 24/7 support to the space sensor network (SSN), maintaining the space catalog and managing United States Strategic Command’s (USSTRATCOM) space situational awareness (SSA) sharing program to United States, foreign government, and commercial entities. The squadron also conducts advanced analysis, sensor optimization, conjunction assessment, human spaceflight support, reentry/break-up assessment, and launch analysis.
