The cultural life of Sydney, Australia is dynamic and multicultural. Many of the individual cultures that make up the Sydney mosaic are centred on the cultural, artistic, ethnic, linguistic and religious communities formed by waves of immigration. Sydney is a major global city with a vibrant scene of musical, theatrical, visual, literary and other artistic activity.
Electroacoustic music is a genre of Western art music in which composers use technology to manipulate the timbres of acoustic sounds, sometimes by using audio signal processing, such as reverb or harmonizing, on acoustical instruments. It originated around the middle of the 20th century, following the incorporation of electric sound production into compositional practice. The initial developments in electroacoustic music composition to fixed media during the 20th century are associated with the activities of the Groupe de recherches musicales at the ORTF in Paris, the home of musique concrète, the Studio for Electronic Music in Cologne, where the focus was on the composition of elektronische Musik, and the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center in New York City, where tape music, electronic music, and computer music were all explored. Practical electronic music instruments began to appear in the early 1900s.
David Chesworth is an Australian-based interdisciplinary artist and composer. Known for his experimental and at times minimalist music, he has worked solo, in post-punk groups, electronic music, contemporary ensembles and experimental performance. He has also created installation and video artworks with collaborator Sonia Leber, such as Zaum Tractor included in the 56th Venice Biennale (2015) and This Is Before We Disappear From View commissioned by Sydney Biennale (2014).
Georges Lentz is a contemporary composer and sound artist, born in Luxembourg in 1965, and is that country's internationally best-known composer. Since 1990, he has been living in Sydney, Australia. Despite his relatively small output and his reclusiveness, he is also considered one of Australia's leading composers. He spends part of each year at his secondary residence in Berlin.

Tyondai Adaien Braxton is an American composer and musician. He has been writing and performing music under his own name and collaboratively under various group titles and collectives since the mid-1990s, including in the experimental rock group Battles from its formation in 2002 until his departure from the group in 2010. He studied composition at the Hartt School of the University of Hartford in West Hartford, Connecticut with Robert Carl, Ingram Marshall, and Ken Steen.

Ross Edwards is an Australian composer of a wide variety of music including orchestral and chamber music, choral music, children's music, opera and film music. He also recognises the profound importance of music as an agent of healing. Jonathan Anthony Rose is an Australian violinist, composer, and multimedia artist. Rose's work is centered in the experimental music known as free improvisation, where he has created large environmental multimedia works, built experimental musical instruments, and improvised violin concertos with accompanying orchestra. He has been described by Tony Mitchell as "undoubtedly the most exploratory, imaginative and iconoclastic violin player who has lived in Australia."
Joseph Stanislaus Ostoja-Kotkowski AM, FRSA was best known for his ground-breaking work in chromasonics, laser kinetics and 'sound and image' productions. He earned recognition in Australia and overseas for his pioneering work in laser sound and image technology. His work included painting, photography, film-making, theatre design, fabric design, murals, kinetic and static sculpture, stained glass, vitreous enamel murals, op-collages, computer graphics, and laser art. Ostoja flourished between 1940 and 1994.

Roger Thornton Dean is a British-Australian musician, academic, biochemist and cognitive scientist. He is married to poet, writer, musician and academic Hazel Anne Smith, and was educated in the UK at the Crypt School, Gloucester, and Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. Formerly, he was the foundation Director of the Heart Research Institute, Sydney (1988–2002), and then the Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Canberra (2002–2007). Colin Black is an Australian experimental music composer, sonic media arts practitioner, radio artist and researcher. Ines Reingold-Tali, known by her stage names Inéz, Inèz or Inez, is an Estonian new media artist, musician, composer and writer on sound art, noise, electronic music, glitch and digital culture. She lives and works in Finland. Since the mid-1990s she has belonged to a new generation of composers in Finland interested in experimental interdisciplinary art projects and electronic music. Her repertoire includes electroacoustic chamber music, experimental, electronic and film music. She has been engaged in commissioned projects in the fields of electroacoustic, contemporary chamber music and experimental music, in different audiovisual art projects, video art, poetry, performance, theater, short films and radio-art. Her compositions have been broadcast internationally on various radio stations and television channels in many European countries, Australia, Canada and the USA. Her works have been published on solo-albums and international compilations by various labels, incl. K-tel International, FG Music/Naxos, YOCOMA, YAP and Charm of Sound. She has been nominated to participate in various international festivals, exhibitions and conferences, Florence Biennale 2007 in Italy, LACDA International Juried Competition Winners Show (award) at the Los Angeles Center for Digital Art in USA 2007, 30e Festival International des Musiques Syntheses 2000 in France and international conferences on musicology, among others.

The Australian Art Orchestra (AAO) is one of Australia's leading contemporary ensembles. Founded by pianist Paul Grabowsky in 1994, it has been led by composer/trumpeter/sound artist Peter Knight since 2013. The Orchestra explores relationships between musical disciplines and cultures, imagining new musical concepts that reference how 21st century Australia responds to its cultural and musical history.
