The Jorma Panula Conducting Competition, is a music competition for young European conductors in Vaasa, Finland. [1]

A music competition is a public event designed to identify and award outstanding musical ensembles, soloists and musicologists. Pop music competitions are music competitions which are held to find pop starlets. Examples of music competitions include Open Mic UK, SoundWave Music Competition, All-Japan Band Association annual contest, the World Music Contest, Live and Unsigned, the Eurovision Song Contest, and American Idol.

It has been defined as "the art of directing the simultaneous performance of several players or singers by the use of gesture." The primary duties of the conductor are to interpret the score in a way which reflects the specific indications in that score, set the tempo, ensure correct entries by ensemble members, and "shape" the phrasing where appropriate. Conductors communicate with their musicians primarily through hand gestures, usually with the aid of a baton, and may use other gestures or signals such as eye contact. A conductor usually supplements their direction with verbal instructions to their musicians in rehearsal.

History

The first competition, named after the conductor and conducting professor Jorma Panula, was organized in 1999 with the idea of being a platform for young conductors starting their professional careers. [2] The president of the Jury is Jorma Panula and the jury includes several musicians such as Olari Elts, Karsten Witt and Atso Almila. [3] During the competition the contestants conduct the Sinfonia Finlandia and the Vaasa City Orchestra.

Jorma Juhani Panula is a Finnish conductor, composer, and teacher of conducting. He has mentored many notable Finnish conductors, such as Esa-Pekka Salonen, Mikko Franck, Sakari Oramo, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, and Osmo Vänskä.

The International Uuno Klami Composition Competition is a composition competition. It has been held once in five years since 2004 and it has been named after the Finnish composer Uuno Klami. It is being organized by Kansainvälisen Uuno Klami –sävellyskilpailun kannatusyhdistys ry, which consists of Kymi Sinfonietta and the cities of Kotka and Kouvola, Finland. Kymi Sinfonietta also plays the works in the finals. The main goal of the competition is to bring forward the life work of Uuno Klami and to help improve his international recognition. Balázs Kocsár is a Hungarian orchestral and operatic conductor. He was born in 1963 in Budapest. His father Miklós Kocsár is a composer awarded the Kossuth Prize. He studied composition at Béla Bartók Vocational School of Music. Then he entered the prestigious Franz Liszt Academy of Music to study choir conducting under István Párkai which was followed by studies in orchestral conducting under the guidance of Ervin Lukács. He graduated with distinction in 1991. His studies were continued at Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien under Professor Karl Österreicher. Benjamin Northey is an Australian conductor, musician and arranger. He has been Chief Conductor of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra in New Zealand, since 2015. He is also the Associate Conductor of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra since 2011.
