Judy Johnson (born 1961) [1] is an Australian poet and novelist. She has won many awards, including the C. J. Dennis Prize for Poetry, the Josephine Ulrick Poetry Prize and the Wesley Michel Wright Prize (twice).

Life

Johnson lives and writes in Newcastle. Her early poetry was published in 1994 and she became an established poet. In 2011 Fourth Estate published her historical novel, The Secret Fate of Mary Watson. [2] Since then, she has written a three-part series of novels titled, The Ripper's Net in 2014–15. [3]

Awards and recognition

Johnson has won the Wesley Michel Wright Prize twice, in 2000 for Nomadic [4] and in 2013 for Stone Scar Air Water. [5] The latter was also shortlisted for the Poetry Award at the 2014 Western Australian Premier's Book Awards. [6]

She won the 2001 Bruce Dawe National Poetry Prize for "My Dressmaking Aunt" [7] and the Griffith University Josephine Ulrick Poetry Prize for "The African Spider Cures" the following year. [8] She won the Banjo Paterson Writing Award for Open Poetry for "A Whaler's Wife at Sea" [9] and the Henry Kendall Poetry Award for "Between the Lines" in 2004. [10]

At the 2007 Victorian Premier's Literary Awards she won the C. J. Dennis Prize for Poetry for her verse novel, Jack. [11]

Her book, Dark Convicts, was shortlisted for the Multicultural Award at the 2018 NSW Premier's Literary Awards. [12]

The Josephine Ulrick Poetry Prize is an award given to Australian poets for a single poem. The initial prize was awarded at the Somerset Celebration of Literature literary dinner in Surfers Paradise, Queensland, Australia in March 1998. The prize was created by Win Schubert, Director of Art Galleries Schubert at the Gold Coast, in celebration of the dynamic life of her gallery manager and close friend, Josephine Ulrick. From 1998 until 2000, the Prize was managed by the Somerset Celebration of Literature, then from 2001 to 2003 it moved to the University of Queensland, Ulrick being a former student of that university. It then became a part of the Creative Writing program at Griffith University, Gold Coast, in Queensland. Starting in 2013, the Arts, Education and Law Group at Griffith University funded the award fully, and the name was changed to the Griffith University Josephine Ulrick Poetry Prize. The award has not been made since 2016.
