Kala/Balge is a Local Government Area of Borno State, Nigeria. It is the easternmost LGA of Nigeria. It has its headquarters in the town of Rann.

Climate/Geography

The overall area of Kala Balge LGA is 1,896 square kilometers, with an average temperature of 34°C. The LGA experiences two distinct seasons: the dry and the wet. The dry season is frequently marked by exceptionally high temperatures in the region. It is calculated that the average wind speed in Kala Balge LGA is 9 km/h. [1]

The LGA comprises towns and villages such as Duguma, Kulakura, Gulgum, Mada, Bombo, Diama, Sabba, and Kalam. The majority of the area's inhabitants belong to ethnic groups such as Hausa, Kanuri, and Fulani. The Hausa language is commonly spoken in the area.

History

It is one of the sixteen LGAs that constitute the Dikwa Emirate, a traditional state located in Borno State, Nigeria. [3]

Insurgency

On May 14, 2014, local civilian vigilantes repelled a raid by the terrorist group Boko Haram, killing over 200 militants. [4] On May 31, 500 Boko Haram terrorists returned and overwhelmed the vigilantes killing 40. [5]

The Konduga massacre took place in Konduga, Borno State, Nigeria on 11 February 2014. The massacre was conducted by Boko Haram Islamists against Christian villagers. At least 62 people were killed.

The Sambisa Forest is a forest in Borno State, northeast Nigeria. It is in the southwestern part of Chad Basin National Park, about 60 km southeast of Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State. It has an area of 518 km2.

From 20 to 23 June 2014, a series of attacks occurred in Borno State, Nigeria. 91 women and children were kidnapped in the attacks and more than 70 people were killed.

Between 23 and 25 June 2014, a series of attacks occurred in central Nigeria. On 23–24 June, gunmen attacked a number of villages in Kaduna State, killing around 150 people. The attack was blamed on Fulani tribesmen. On 25 June 2014, a bomb exploded at the Emab Plaza in the national capital of Abuja, killing at least 21 people. In response to the bombing, the Nigerian military raided two militants camps on 26 June, killing more than 100 people.
