The murder of Officer Michael Briggs took place on October 16, 2006, in Manchester, New Hampshire, United States. Police officer Michael Briggs was shot while on duty. Briggs was later transported to the hospital where he died of his injuries. The suspect, Michael "Stix" Addison, fled the state of New Hampshire, prompting a manhunt by police. Fifteen hours after the shooting, Addison was arrested in Dorchester, Massachusetts, waived domestic extradition, and was transported back to New Hampshire.

Larry A. Martin is a Republican and a former member of the South Carolina Senate, representing the 2nd District since 1992 until 2017. In 2012, he was named Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. He previously served in the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1979 through 1992. He was the youngest member of the SC House for six years, and his thirty-eight years of total service in the General Assembly is a record for any member from Pickens County. Martin is believed to have been the only non-lawyer to serve as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Terie Norelli is a Democratic former member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives, serving the Rockingham 16th District and later 26th District from 1996 through 2014. She served as Speaker of the House for six years, from 2006 to 2010 and from 2012 to 2014. When Republicans regained control of the New Hampshire House in 2010, she became the Democratic minority leader. Norelli was the first Democratic speaker of the New Hampshire House in 84 years. When the Democrats regained control of the New Hampshire House in 2012, she was elected to the role of speaker again.
