Certified Public Accountant (CPA) is the title of qualified accountants in numerous countries in the English-speaking world. In the United States, the CPA is a license to provide accounting services to the public. It is awarded by each of the 50 states for practice in that state. Additionally, almost every state has passed mobility laws to allow CPAs from other states to practice in their state. State licensing requirements vary, but the minimum standard requirements include passing the Uniform Certified Public Accountant Examination, 150 semester units of college education, and one year of accounting related experience.

History of the company

Founded in 1985, in 2000 the company sold its commercial business to concentrate exclusively on the federal market. [3] The next decade saw a major increase in the company's business, with annual revenues rising from $5 million to close to $75 million, and staff numbers from thirty to over four hundred. [3] In December 2010 the company was named one of 'Washington's fastest-growing companies'. [4] The company was also among Accounting Today's '2010 Best Accounting Firms to Work For'. [5] In a statement of January 2011 CEO Edward F. Kearney opined "you must create your own demand by delivering … quality of service" and added "my style is to find the right players and give them space to do what they do well". [3] Kearney & Company sponsor the Federal Accounting Handbook, and Ed Kearney is one of the co-authors of this manual. [6] Kearney & Company display on their corporate website the American insignia of the bald eagle and the United States Capitol. [7]

Accounting Today is a trade magazine servicing the public accounting profession in the United States. Started in 1987, it grew to a circulation of more than 30,000. The parent company of Accounting Today is SourceMedia. With over 400 employees Source Media is the publisher of more than 30 periodical brands including several major financial magazines. SourceMedia publications include American Banker, The Bond Buyer, Employee Benefit News, and Financial Planning.

Audit systematic and independent examination of books, accounts, documents and vouchers of an organization

An audit is a systematic and independent examination of books, accounts, statutory records, documents and vouchers of an organization to ascertain how far the financial statements as well as non-financial disclosures present a true and fair view of the concern. It also attempts to ensure that the books of accounts are properly maintained by the concern as required by law. Auditing has become such a ubiquitous phenomenon in the corporate and the public sector that academics started identifying an "Audit Society". The auditor perceives and recognises the propositions before them for examination, obtains evidence, evaluates the same and formulates an opinion on the basis of his judgement which is communicated through their audit report.

Financial audit

A financial audit is conducted to provide an opinion whether "financial statements" are stated in accordance with specified criteria. Normally, the criteria are international accounting standards, although auditors may conduct audits of financial statements prepared using the cash basis or some other basis of accounting appropriate for the organisation. In providing an opinion whether financial statements are fairly stated in accordance with accounting standards, the auditor gathers evidence to determine whether the statements contain material errors or other misstatements.

1Malaysia Development Berhad Insolvent development company embroiled in scandals

1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) is an insolvent Malaysian strategic development company, wholly owned by the Minister of Finance (Incorporated). Since 2015, the company has been under heavy scrutiny for its suspicious money transactions and evidence pointing to money laundering, fraud, and theft. A lawsuit filed by United States Department of Justice (DOJ), alleged that at least US$3.5 billion has been stolen from Malaysia's 1MDB state-owned fund.

The Olympus scandal was precipitated on 14 October 2011 when British-born Michael Woodford was suddenly ousted as chief executive of international optical equipment manufacturer Olympus Corporation. He had been company president for six months, and two weeks prior had been promoted to chief executive officer, when he exposed "one of the biggest and longest-running loss-hiding arrangements in Japanese corporate history", according to The Wall Street Journal. Tsuyoshi Kikukawa, the board chairman, who had appointed Woodford to these positions, again assumed the title of CEO and president. The incident raised concern about the endurance of tobashi schemes, and the strength of corporate governance in Japan.
