Kevin Patrick Pickford (born March 12,1975) is a retired Major League Baseball pitcher. He played during one season at the major league level for the San Diego Padres. He was initially offered a scholarship to Florida State. He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2nd round of the 1993 amateur draft. Pickford played his first professional season with their Rookie league Gulf Coast Pirates in 1993,and his last with the San Francisco Giants' Triple-A Fresno Grizzlies in 2004. He batted .371 his final year of high school.

He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1997 through 2008,most notably as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals,where he was a two-time All-Star and led the National League in 2001 with 22 wins. After playing nine seasons with the Cardinals,he played his last three seasons with the San Francisco Giants and Pittsburgh Pirates.

The 1993 San Francisco Giants season was the Giants' 111th season in Major League Baseball,their 36th season in San Francisco since their move from New York following the 1957 season,and their 34th season at Candlestick Park. It was the first season with Dusty Baker as manager,having been promoted from previously serving as the hitting coach under Roger Craig. In the offseason,under new ownership and general manager,Barry Bonds left the Pittsburgh Pirates to sign a lucrative free agent contract worth a then-record $43.75 million over six years with the Giants,with whom his father,Bobby Bonds,spent the first seven years of his career,and with whom his godfather Willie Mays played 22 of his 24 Major League seasons. The deal was,at that time,the largest in baseball history,in terms of both total value and average annual salary. To honor his father,Bonds switched his jersey number to 25 once he signed with the Giants,as it had been Bobby's number in San Francisco. Bonds hit .336 in 1993,leading the league with 46 home runs and 123 RBI en route to his second consecutive MVP award and third overall.

Mark Alan Merchant is an American former professional baseball player whose career spanned ten seasons in minor league baseball,parts of one season in the Northern League,and one season in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. A highly rated prospect out of Oviedo High School,Merchant was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates with the second overall selection after Ken Griffey Jr. in the 1987 Major League Baseball draft. During the 1989 season,the Pirates traded Merchant to the Seattle Mariners as a part of a five-player deal.
