Komando Daerah Militer XVII/Cenderawasih or Kodam XVII/Cenderawasih (17th Military Regional Command/Cenderawasih), is a military area command of the Indonesian Army, as the 17th (Roman numeral "XVII") Kodam, which oversees the entire Papua. [1]

Previously Irian Jaya and the Maluku islands were under Kodam VIII/Trikora. [2] Kodam VIII/Trikora had in 1997 six infantry battalions plus engineer detachments. [3] The district commands in 1997 included Korem 171 (HQ Manokwari), Korem 172 (HQ Abepura), Korem 173 (HQ Biak) and Korem 174 (HQ Ambon). The South Pacific Yearbook reported three infantry battalions which were based at Manokwari, Jayapura, and Sorong, as well as mentioning a naval base at Biak. The military command derives its name (Cenderawasih) from the Indonesian word for the bird-of-paradise, which is native to Papua.

On June 8, 2012, the Indonesian Police told AFP that one person was killed and 17 wounded when Indonesian soldiers opened fire on civilians after a deadly dispute sparked by a road accident in Papua province. The shootings took place late on June 7, 2012, after residents, angry that two soldiers on a motorcycle hit and injured a child, stabbed one of the troops to death and seriously injured the other in Wamena: "Following the road accident soldiers.. arrived in two trucks and took revenge by firing gunshots toward local residents and setting a number of houses on fire," national police spokesman Saud Usman Nasution said. "The trouble then spread to the city centre where a number of shops and houses were also damaged by gunshots," he told AFP. [4]

Indonesian: Komando Daerah Militer IV/Diponegoro or KODAM IV/Diponegoro is a military area command of the Indonesian Army. It covers the provinces of Central Java and Yogyakarta on the island of Java. It is named after the Java War hero Prince Diponegoro. It appears to have been first established in 1950, and inherited the heritage of the former 3rd Diponegoro Division and other Central Java infantry units. Diponegoro Division personnel have been very significant in the history of the Indonesian Army. Among its early officers were Sarwo Edhie Wibowo, who served as battalion and regimental commander in the division from 1945-53. Former commanders of the division include Soeharto, a former president of Indonesia. Divisional personnel, including Lieutenant Colonel Untung Syamsuri, were involved in the 30 September Movement events of 1965. Former president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was also member of this KODAM when he took command of KOREM 072/Pamungkas at Yogyakarta during his military tenure.

2nd Military Region Command/Sriwijaya is a territorial defence command, which includes the provinces of Bengkulu, Jambi, South Sumatra, Bangka-Belitung Islands and Lampung. The commander is Army Maj. Gen. Nugroho Widiyotomo, who has held the position since January 2008.

Kodam IX/Udayana is a military area command of the Indonesian Army which is responsible for the provinces of Bali, West Nusa Tenggara and East Nusa Tenggara. It was established as part of the 1985 reorganisation of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and included East Timor until that province achieved independence in 1999.

Kodam XIV/Hasanuddin

Komando Daerah Militer XIV/Hasanuddin is a military command area of the Military of Indonesia. It overseas the following provinces on Sulawesi island: South Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi and West Sulawesi.

Komando Daerah Militer XVI/ Pattimura is the Defense Regional Command which contains Province North Maluku and Maluku. The territorial area of Kodam XVI / Pattimura covers 2 (two) Provinces, namely North Maluku Province and Maluku Province and 20 (twenty) Regency / City areas, namely 9 Regencies / Cities in Maluku Province North and 11 Regencies / Cities in Maluku Province and 171 District Areas, namely 111 Districts in North Maluku Province and 60 Districts in Maluku Province. Kodam XVI / Pattimura has 2 (two) Military Resort Commands (Korem) namely Korem 151 / Binaiya consisted of 5 Kodim according to Maluku Province region with Korem 152 / Babullah consists of 6 Kodim Covers North Maluku Province region. Kodam XVIII/Kasuari

Komando Daerah Militer XVIII/ Kasuari, is the Defense Regional Command in West Papua Province, which was created in 2016 with the division of parts of Kodam XVII/Cenderawasih which is located in Jayapura, Papua Province.

Regional Training Regiment is defined as a military educational institution under the control of the Regional Military Command for enlisted and non-commissioned officers which have the main task of helping organize training and education for all ranks of the Kodam to produce soldiers who are professional, reliable, quality and have strong militancy and are loved by the people not just of their communities but of the country at large. Rindam has several units in charge of conducting first, vocational and qualification education. Regional Training Regiments are stationed in all 15 territorial commands of the Indonesian Army and are stationed in key Indonesian cities.

The Bloody Paniai case was a mass shooting by the Indonesian army from 753rd Special Raider Infantry Battalion of Korem 173/Praja Vira Braja of Kodam XVII/Cendrawasih which killed four teenagers and wounded of 17 others in Papua province of Indonesia on 8 December 2014.
