Lake Vernon is located in the Tiltill Valley in the northern sector of Yosemite National Park just north of Hetch Hetchy Valley. The surface elevation of the lake is 6,568 ft (2,002 m). Due to the remote location of the lake it is usually only accessed as a backpacking destination. The area surrounding the lake was once home to a band of Sierra Miwok Indians, and numerous artifacts can be found in the area. Lake Vernon is the source of Falls Creek, which feeds Wapama Falls.

As of the 2010 United States Census, the township's population was 23,943, reflecting a decline of 743 (-3.0%) from the 24,686 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 3,475 (+16.4%) from the 21,211 counted in the 1990 Census. It is both the most populous municipality and the largest in area in the county.

Kekuli Bay Provincial Park, formerly Kalamalka West Provincial Park, is a provincial park in British Columbia, Canada, located on the west shore of Kalamalka Lake on BC Highway 97 south of Vernon. The lake is popular for waterskiing and boating, and the park includes a boat launch, as well as a campground with a view of the lake. The park was established in 1990. Its size is about 57 hectares.

One of the major bodies of water in the Winthrop Lakes Region, the lake is known for its rocky shores, scenery, deep cool water, and naturally reproducing lake trout population. A public boat launch is located on the north shore in Mount Vernon off State Route #41.
