The work-wear brand Le Mont St Michel was launched in 1913 in Pontorson, just a few miles away from the famous abbey after which it was named.
In 1920, Caroline Lesaffre founded a textile company in Wizernes (Pas-de-Calais), "Les Tricotages de l'Aa", [1] which combined a factory with a school for young women whose fathers, brothers and husbands had not returned from World War I.
In 1964, Patrice Milan, Lessafre's grandson, took the reins of the company and modernised it by installing high-performance knitting machines. [2] A lover of French country estates, he bought the Chateau de Monthorin. The Tricotages de l'Aa continued to prosper by manufacturing for well-known designers such as agnès b., Gerard Darel and Joseph. [3]
In 1998, Alexandre Milan, succeeded his father as head of the company, acquired the tradename Le Mont Saint-Michel, combined the two companies [4] and created a new brand under the Le Mont Saint-Michel name.

The Order of Saint Michael is a French dynastic order of chivalry, founded by King Louis XI of France on 1 August 1469, in response to the Order of the Golden Fleece founded by Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, Louis' chief competitor for the allegiance of the great houses of France, the dukes of Orléans, Berry, and Brittany. As a chivalric order, its goal was to confirm the loyalty of its knights to the king. Originally, there were a limited number of knights, at first thirty-one, then increased to thirty-six including the king. An office of Provost was established in 1476. The Order of St Michael was the highest Order in France until it was superseded by the Order of the Holy Spirit.

The Mont-Saint-Michel Bay is located between Brittany and the Normandy peninsula of Cotentin. The bay was listed as a UNESCO world heritage site in 1979 for its aesthetic quality and its importance to the Christian tradition. Due to the significant tidal movements in this region a large part of the bay is uncovered at low tide. There are two granitic islands in the bay: Tombelaine and the Mont-Saint-Michel. Many birds and harbor seals live in this area.
