Leviathan / Xasthur is a split album featuring music from black metal bands Xasthur and Leviathan. Tracks 1 through 7 were performed by Xasthur,while tracks 8 through 10 were performed by Leviathan.

It is Mastodon's first concept album,loosely based on the 1851 novel Moby-Dick by Herman Melville. As the title implies,the album is very black metal-influenced,utilizing many guest musicians of the genre,including Malefic and Wrest from Xasthur and Leviathan,respectively. Metal Forces is a British publication founded in 1983 which promotes the music genres heavy metal and hard rock. Metal Forces was well known for its coverage of unsigned bands through its Demolition feature and championed the likes of Metallica,Slayer,Megadeth,HellsBelles,Overkill,Death and Poison long before they had secured record deals. They are credited as contributing in this fashion to the success of the band Anacrusis. Dave Reynolds,a former writer for Metal Forces,has claimed that the magazine was the first to coin the terms thrash metal and death metal. A Metal Forces compiled vinyl album,Demolition –Scream Your Brains Out!,based on the magazine's popular Demolition column,was released in 1988 through Chain Reaction Records featuring Anacrusis,Atrophy,Hobbs' Angel of Death,Aftermath and the Chris Barnes fronted Leviathan. In addition to metal acts,the magazine also featured interviews with alternative rock acts such as Nirvana.
Leviathan is an American black metal solo project that started in 1998 by Jef Whitehead under the pseudonym Wrest. On all Leviathan albums,Wrest records all instruments and performs vocals on his own.
Xasthur is the project of American musician Scott "Malefic" Conner. Conner formed Xasthur in 1995 and released eight studio albums of black metal by 2010,when he announced the end of the project. However,he began using the name once again in 2015 to instead perform acoustic neofolk music. The first album with this new style was entitled Subject to Change,released in 2016.
"Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns" is a song by the Seattle rock band Mother Love Bone. The song is the fourth track on the band's debut EP,Shine (1989). "Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns" is actually two songs sequenced together. "Crown of Thorns" is found by itself on the band's sole studio album,Apple (1990). "Chloe Dancer" is not available as a stand-alone track.

A Gate Through Bloodstained Mirrors is a 2001 demo by the American black metal one-man-band Xasthur. Reviews of that release,first published by Profane Productions as a limited CD-R edition of 150 copies,proved to be positive,comparing the material to old Graveland and Burzum. With the increasing cult status of Xasthur,the demo was reissued by Total Holocaust Records,featuring a different mix and track list. This edition was also published as a double-12" vinyl release by Debemur Morti Productions (2004) and finally by Hydra Head Records.
