Yaoi,also known as boys' love and its abbreviation BL,is a genre of fictional media originating in Japan that features homoerotic relationships between male characters. It is typically created by heterosexual women for heterosexual women and is thus distinct from bara,a genre of homoerotic media marketed to gay men,though yaoi does also attract a gay male audience and can be produced by gay male creators. Yaoi spans a wide range of media,including manga,anime,drama CDs,novels,video games,television series,films,and fan works. While "yaoi" is commonly used in the west as an umbrella term for Japanese-influenced media with male-male relationships,"boys' love" and "BL" are the generic terms for this kind of media in Japan and much of Asia.
Shotacon,abbreviated from Shōtarōcomplex,is,in Japanese contexts,the attraction to young boy characters,or media centered around this attraction. The term refers to a genre of manga and anime wherein prepubescent or pubescent male characters are depicted in a suggestive or erotic manner,whether in the obvious role of object of attraction,or the less apparent role of "subject".
Kizuna:Bonds of Love is a yaoi manga,authored by Kazuma Kodaka. In Japan,a total of eleven volumes were published first by Biblos and then by Libre Publishing between December 1992 and September 2008. In North America,the series was partially released in English by Be Beautiful between September 2004 and August 2007. Digital Manga Publishing later acquired the license and condensed the entire series into six volumes,published from September 2010 to May 2012.
Gengoroh Tagame is a pseudonymous Japanese manga artist. Regarded as the most influential creator in the gay manga genre,he has produced over 20 books in four languages over the course of his nearly four decade-long career. Tagame began contributing manga and prose fiction to Japanese gay men's magazines in the 1980s,after making his debut as a manga artist in the yaoi manga magazine June while in high school. As a student he studied graphic design at Tama Art University,and worked as a commercial graphic designer and art director to support his career as a manga artist. His manga series The Toyed Man,originally serialized in the gay men's magazine Badi from 1992 to 1993,enjoyed breakout success after it was published as a book in 1994. After co-founding the gay men's magazine G-men in 1995,Tagame began working as a gay manga artist full-time.
Zetsuai 1989 is a Japanese yaoi manga known for its melodramatic,almost operatic plot,its "semi-insane characters",and for the controversial style of its artwork. The word "Zetsu-ai" is a compound created by Minami Ozaki which has been translated as "desperate love". Ozaki's preferred English translation is "Everlasting Love". Many western yaoi fans got their introduction to the genre through this series,which defined the genre for them.
Kaze to Ki no Uta is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Keiko Takemiya. It was serialized in the manga magazine Shūkan Shōjo Comic from 1976 to 1980,and in the manga magazine Petit Flower from 1981 to 1984. One of the earliest works in the shōnen-ai genre,Kaze to Ki no Uta follows the tragic romance between Gilbert Cocteau and Serge Battour,two students at an all-boys boarding school in late 19th-century France.

It was published in English by Be Beautiful Manga prior to Biblos's bankruptcy. In 2012,SuBLime Manga announced that they had licensed the series for an omnibus release. As of 2023,only the first 6 volumes have been released in North America. In addition to the manga,a drama CD and OVA have been released. Nitta chose to use the pornography industry as a backdrop because she felt it had potential,and she felt there was a parallel between how the pornography industry is marginalised in Japan and how boys love manga is marginalised within the manga industry.
Wild Rock (ワイルド・ロック) is an explicit yaoi manga created by Kazusa Takashima and is published in English by Blu Manga,the boys love publishing division of Tokyopop. It is published in Spain by Ediciones La Cúpula,in Italy by Kappa Edizioni,in France by Taifu Comics,and in German by Carlsen Manga. In May 2007,Wild Rock was re-released in print in Japan called the Libre Edition. This volume includes a new story that is a sequel to the extra story Child Rock.

Aki Sora is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Masahiro Itosugi. It was first published in September 2007 by Akita Shoten. An OVA adaptation by Hoods Entertainment was released with the third volume of the manga on December 17,2008. A second OVA adaptation,called Aki Sora ~Yume no Naka~ (あきそら～夢の中～) was released by Pony Canyon in two parts;the first part released on July 30,2009,and the second part released on November 17,2009. In April 2011,Itosugi announced that there will be no more printings of volumes 1 and 3 due to Bill 156.

The series has appeared on manga best-seller lists both in Japan and in Germany,and the long-delayed US release has been labeled "one of the most highly-anticipated yaoi releases ever". The series is licensed in English by Juné. Bara is a colloquialism for a genre of Japanese art and media known within Japan as gay manga (ゲイ漫画) or gei komi. The genre focuses on male same-sex love,as created primarily by gay men for a gay male audience. Bara can vary in visual style and plot,but typically features masculine men with varying degrees of muscle,body fat,and body hair,akin to bear or bodybuilding culture. While bara is typically pornographic,the genre has also depicted romantic and autobiographical subject material,as it acknowledges the varied reactions to homosexuality in modern Japan.

Recently,My Sister is Unusual,also known as ImoCho (妹ちょ。),is a Japanese manga series by Mari Matsuzawa,serialized in Fujimi Shobo's Monthly Dragon Age since November 9,2010. An anime television series premiered in Japan in January 2014. It was adapted into a light novel written by Kougetsu Mikazuki,which was published on January 18,2014 under Fujimi Shobo's Fujimi Fantasia Bunko imprint. A live action film adaptation premiered on May 17,2014.
My Monster Secret,known in Japan as Actually,I Am...,is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Eiji Masuda. It was serialized in Akita Shoten's shōnen manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Champion from January 31,2013 to February 16,2017. Akita Shoten collected the series in 22 tankōbon volumes.
True Love is a Japanese slice-of-life romance shōjo manga series written and illustrated by Miwako Sugiyama. It was published by Shogakukan,with serialization on Sho-Comi magazine and with seven volumes compiling the chapters released between 2013 and 2015.
