Lisa H. Naito is an American politician from the state of Oregon. A Democrat,she has served as a state representative and as a Multnomah County commissioner.
Naito was elected to the Oregon House of Representatives in 1990,serving three terms. In 1998,she was elected to the county commission and served for ten years. [1] [2] In between those offices she served on the Metro Council. [1]
In March 2004,Naito,along with three other Multnomah county commissioners,approved plans to begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples in Multnomah County;they issued over 3,000 licenses before the move was blocked by a judge the next month. [3] [4] [5] [6]
Naito formed Hooley &Naito,a strategic planning and legislative advocacy firm,with former Congresswoman Darlene Hooley after leaving office. [7]
She is married to Steve Naito,the son of Bill Naito. [8]
Multnomah County is one of the 36 counties in the U.S. state of Oregon. As of the 2020 census,the county's population was 815,428. Multnomah County is part of the Portland–Vancouver–Hillsboro,OR–WA metropolitan statistical area. Though smallest in area,Multnomah County is the state's most populous county. Its county seat,Portland,is the state's largest city.

The Ross Island Bridge is a cantilever truss bridge that spans the Willamette River in Portland,Oregon. It carries U.S. Route 26 across the river between southwest and southeast Portland. The bridge opened in 1926 and was designed by Gustav Lindenthal and honors Oregon pioneer Sherry Ross. It is named for its proximity to Ross Island. Although it looks like a deck arch bridge,it is a cantilever deck truss bridge,a rare type in Oregon.
Ballot Measure 36 was a 2004 initiative in the U.S. state of Oregon. It amended the Oregon Constitution to define marriage as a union of one man and one woman. The initiative passed with 1,028,546 votes in favor,and 787,556 votes against in the November 2,2004 general election. It is one of a number of U.S. state constitutional amendments banning same-sex marriage. However,unlike other similar ballot measures passed on or near the same election date,the amendment did not explicitly ban civil unions between same-sex couples.
Same-sex marriage has been legally recognized in Oregon since May 19,2014,when Judge Michael J. McShane of the U.S. District Court for the District Court of Oregon ruled in Geiger v. Kitzhaber that Oregon's 2004 state constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriages discriminated on the basis of sexual orientation in violation of the Equal Protection Clause of the U.S. Constitution. A campaign that was then under way to win voter approval of a constitutional amendment legalizing same-sex marriage was suspended following the decision. In July 2015,Governor Kate Brown signed legislation codifying same-sex marriage in various Oregon statutes. The law change went into effect on January 1,2016.
Betty Cantrell Roberts was an American politician and judge from the U.S. state of Oregon. She was the 83rd justice of the Oregon Supreme Court. She was the first woman to serve on the Oregon Supreme Court,and had also been the first woman on the Oregon Court of Appeals. Roberts served from 1982 to 1986 on the high court and from 1977 to 1982 on the Court of Appeals.
Sho Dozono is a Japanese-American businessman and former political candidate from Portland,Oregon. He was a candidate in the 2008 Portland mayoral race. Portland City Commissioner Sam Adams was the front runner throughout the race. Dozono,who would have faced Adams again in November if neither candidate had cleared 50%,lost to him in the primary when Adams won 58% of the vote.
Diane Maura Rosenbaum is an American politician in the US state of Oregon who was the majority leader of the Oregon State Senate. She was a Democratic member of the Oregon House of Representatives,representing District 42 from 1998 to 2009. She served as speaker pro tempore. In the 2008 elections,she ran unopposed for the Oregon State Senate,replacing Kate Brown,who was elected secretary of state. She won reelection to District 21 in 2012 after defeating Republican Cliff Hutchison.

William Sumio Naito was an American businessman,civic leader and philanthropist in Portland,Oregon,U.S. He was an enthusiastic advocate for investment in downtown Portland,both private and public,and is widely credited for helping to reverse a decline in the area in the 1970s through acquiring and renovating derelict or aging buildings and encouraging others to invest in downtown and the central city.

Geiger v. Kitzhaber is a decision by the U.S. District Court for the District of Oregon that requires Oregon to allow same-sex couples to marry and to recognize same-sex marriages established in other jurisdictions. The decision arose from two consolidated cases that alleged that Oregon's constitutional ban on same-sex marriage,Article 15,§5,and all related marriage statutes,violate the Due Process Clause and the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution. Among the several defendants,Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum filed appearances in the case to defend Oregon's position,but declined to defend the constitutionality of the bans and ordered state agencies to recognize the validity of same-sex marriages established elsewhere.
Carla Piluso is an American politician and former police officer. She was the first woman to serve as chief of the Gresham Police Department in Gresham,Oregon. In 2014,she won election as a Democrat to the Oregon House of Representatives,representing District 50. Piluso served in the Gresham Police Department for 30 years,beginning in 1979. She is also on the school board for the Gresham-Barlow School District. She was an unsuccessful candidate for Multnomah County commissioner in 2008.
