Matthew Robert Bonner, also known as the Red Rocket, is an American retired professional basketball player. Bonner played college basketball for the University of Florida before being selected by the Chicago Bulls with the 45th overall pick in the 2003 NBA draft. During his career Bonner played for the Toronto Raptors and the San Antonio Spurs with whom he won two NBA championships.
Erick Barkley is an American former professional basketball player. He was selected by the Portland Trail Blazers in the 1st round of the 2000 NBA Draft. Born in Queens, New York, he played high school basketball at Christ The King Regional High School and the Maine Central Institute and college basketball at St. John's University along with George Boller Ron Artest. He was traded by the Blazers with Steve Kerr and a 2003 second-round pick to the San Antonio Spurs for Antonio Daniels, Amal McCaskill and Charles Smith on August 5, 2002. The Spurs traded him to the Chicago Bulls on October 26, 2002, but was waived the same day.

The 2001–02 New York Knicks season was the 56th season for the Knicks in the National Basketball Association (NBA). During the offseason, the Knicks acquired Shandon Anderson from the Houston Rockets and Howard Eisley from the Dallas Mavericks in a three-team trade, while signing free agent Clarence Weatherspoon. Entering the season, the Knicks were without Larry Johnson, who retired during training camp. After a 10–9 start to the season, head coach Jeff Van Gundy unexpectedly resigned in December, explaining he had "diminished focus", though he would return to coach the Houston Rockets in the 2003–04 season. Don Chaney took over for Van Gundy. Under Chaney, the Knicks suffered an 8-game losing streak in January and went 20–43, on their way to finishing last place in the Atlantic Division with a 30–52 record. The Knicks missed the NBA Playoffs for the first time in 15 seasons.
The 2001–02 NBA season was the 13th season for the Orlando Magic in the National Basketball Association. During the offseason, the Magic signed free agent All-Star center Patrick Ewing to their roster, while re-signing Horace Grant to further strengthen the team's depth. Early into the season, they traded Bo Outlaw to the Phoenix Suns for Jud Buechler. Tracy McGrady continued to emerge as a superstar as he finished fourth in the NBA in scoring with 25.6 points per game, and was selected for the 2002 NBA All-Star Game. However, McGrady would not have much help as Grant Hill's comeback was ended after just 14 games, as he had to get more surgery on his bad ankle. Despite Hill's injury, the Magic made it to the playoffs with a record of 44–38, third in the Atlantic Division. In the first round of the playoffs, they lost in four games to the Charlotte Hornets. Following the season, Ewing, Buechler and Dee Brown all retired, Troy Hudson signed as a free agent with the Minnesota Timberwolves, and Monty Williams signed with the Philadelphia 76ers.
The highest-paid NBA players by season has recently eclipsed $40 million. Larry Bird was the first player to earn $5 million or more with a salary of $7,070,000 in the 1991-92 season. Magic Johnson became the first player to earn $10 million or more in the 94-95 season with a salary of $14,660,000. Patrick Ewing became the first player to earn $15 million or more in the 95-96 season with a salary of $18,724,000. Michael Jordan was the first NBA player to sign a contract worth over twenty million and in fact it succeeded thirty million dollars as well in a season, this was a record he had held for 15 years. During the 1997–98 season, Jordan earned $33,140,000, which still stands as the most any NBA player has earned on a 1 year contract, Jordan also holds the record for the second largest 1 year contract at $30,140,000 in the 1996-97 season. Kobe Bryant become just the second player to reach this milestone when the 2013–14 season began. LeBron James became the third in the 2016–17 season. Stephen Curry became the first player to eclipse $40-Million per year when he signed a record 5-year contract worth $201-Million in 2017, starting with $34,682,550 in the 2017-18 season and ending with the largest earnings in the 2021-22 season with a record payout of $45,780,966.
The 2000–01 NBA season was the Kings' 52nd season in the National Basketball Association, and 16th season in Sacramento. During the offseason, the Kings acquired shooting guard Doug Christie from the Toronto Raptors and signed free agent Bobby Jackson. After two straight playoff seasons, the Kings would make it into the NBA's elite status by challenging the Pacific Division all season, falling just one game short with a solid 55–27 record. Chris Webber had his best season averaging 27.1 points and 11.1 rebounds per game, as he was selected along with Vlade Divac for the 2001 NBA All-Star Game, while first round draft pick Hedo Türkoğlu made the All-Rookie Second Team. In the first round of the playoffs, the Kings would win their first playoff series in 20 years by beating the Phoenix Suns in four games after losing Game 1. However, they were swept by the defending and eventual NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers in the semifinals in four straight games. Following the season, Jason Williams was traded along with Nick Anderson to the Memphis Grizzlies, and Jon Barry was traded to the Detroit Pistons.
The 2001–02 NBA season was the 76ers 53rd season in the National Basketball Association, and 39th season in Philadelphia. The 76ers were coming off of an NBA Finals defeat to the Los Angeles Lakers, in which they won Game 1, but lost the next 4 games. During the offseason, the Sixers re-acquired Derrick Coleman from the Charlotte Hornets in a three-team trade, acquired Matt Harpring from the Cleveland Cavaliers and signed free agent Derrick McKey. Having won the Eastern Conference Championship last season, reigning MVP Allen Iverson, Sixth Man Aaron McKie, and point guard Eric Snow were all sidelined due to injuries as the Sixers lost their first five games. Also just four games into the season, center Matt Geiger retired. However, when their players returned, they won seven in a row after their bad start, and climbed back into playoff connection finishing fourth in the Atlantic Division with a 43–39 record. Iverson and Dikembe Mutombo were both selected for the 2002 NBA All-Star Game, which Philadelphia hosted and Iverson wore number #6 in honor of Julius Erving.
