The 1996 NBA draft was the 50th draft in the National Basketball Association (NBA). It was held on June 26, 1996 in East Rutherford, New Jersey. In this draft, NBA teams took turns selecting college basketball players and other first-time eligible players, such as players from high schools and non-North American leagues. The Vancouver Grizzlies had the highest probability to win the NBA draft lottery, but since they were an expansion team along with the Toronto Raptors, they were not allowed to select first in this draft. The team with the second highest probability, the Philadelphia 76ers, won the lottery and obtained the first selection. The Toronto Raptors and the Vancouver Grizzlies were second and third respectively.
Ha Seung-Jin is a South Korean professional basketball player who has played in the NBA and the NBA D-League. He was a second round draft pick of the Portland Trail Blazers in the 2004 NBA Draft. At 7 ft 3 in, 305 lb, he was among the largest players in the NBA. He is also the first South Korean to play in the NBA.

The New Orleans Pelicans are an American professional basketball team based in New Orleans, Louisiana. They play in the Southwest Division of the Western Conference of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Pelicans were established as the New Orleans Hornets in the 2002–03 season when then-owner of the Charlotte Hornets, George Shinn, relocated the franchise to New Orleans. During the 2005–07 period, the Hornets played 71 games in Oklahoma City due to the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina. The team officially changed its name to the New Orleans Pelicans on April 18, 2013.
The 2002–03 NBA season was the 57th season for the New York Knicks in the National Basketball Association. After missing the playoffs for the first time in 15 years, the Knicks' hopes for a rebound season took a hit before the start of the season as Antonio McDyess, who was acquired from the Denver Nuggets during the offseason, needed knee surgery and was lost for the entire season. Meanwhile, Latrell Sprewell showed up to training camp with a broken hand, and was fined $250,000. In Don Chaney's first full season as head coach, the Knicks lost ten of their first twelve games and missed the NBA Playoffs for the second straight year, finishing tied for fifth in the Atlantic Division with a 37–45 record, which was a 7-game improvement over their previous season. Following the season, Sprewell was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves.
The 2001–02 New York Knicks season was the 56th season for the Knicks in the National Basketball Association (NBA). During the offseason, the Knicks acquired Shandon Anderson from the Houston Rockets and Howard Eisley from the Dallas Mavericks in a three-team trade, while signing free agent Clarence Weatherspoon. Entering the season, the Knicks were without Larry Johnson, who retired during training camp. After a 10–9 start to the season, head coach Jeff Van Gundy unexpectedly resigned in December, explaining he had "diminished focus", though he would return to coach the Houston Rockets in the 2003–04 season. Don Chaney took over for Van Gundy. Under Chaney, the Knicks suffered an 8-game losing streak in January and went 20–43, on their way to finishing last place in the Atlantic Division with a 30–52 record. The Knicks missed the NBA Playoffs for the first time in 15 seasons.
The 2002–03 NBA season was the Clippers' 33rd season in the National Basketball Association, and their 19th season in Los Angeles. During the offseason, the Clippers acquired Andre Miller from the Cleveland Cavaliers. With the acquisition of Miller, there was a sense of optimism surrounding the Clippers for the first time in years. However, young players were concerned with stats for free agency than winning games, which created tension in the locker room all year. Head coach Alvin Gentry was fired after a 19–39 start, and was replaced with Dennis Johnson. With all the Clippers playing as individuals, the team fell apart early into the season and sank back to the bottom of the Pacific Division with a 27–55 record. Following the season, Johnson was fired as coach, Lamar Odom signed as a free agent with the Miami Heat, Michael Olowokandi signed with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Miller signed with the Denver Nuggets, and longtime three-point specialist Eric Piatkowski signed with the Houston Rockets.
The 2000–01 NBA season was the Kings' 52nd season in the National Basketball Association, and 16th season in Sacramento. During the offseason, the Kings acquired shooting guard Doug Christie from the Toronto Raptors and signed free agent Bobby Jackson. After two straight playoff seasons, the Kings would make it into the NBA's elite status by challenging the Pacific Division all season, falling just one game short with a solid 55–27 record. Chris Webber had his best season averaging 27.1 points and 11.1 rebounds per game, as he was selected along with Vlade Divac for the 2001 NBA All-Star Game, while first round draft pick Hedo Türkoğlu made the All-Rookie Second Team. In the first round of the playoffs, the Kings would win their first playoff series in 20 years by beating the Phoenix Suns in four games after losing Game 1. However, they were swept by the defending and eventual NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers in the semifinals in four straight games. Following the season, Jason Williams was traded along with Nick Anderson to the Memphis Grizzlies, and Jon Barry was traded to the Detroit Pistons.
The 2002–03 NBA season was the Mavericks' 23rd season in the National Basketball Association. During the offseason, the Mavericks signed free agent Walt Williams. The Mavericks started the season strong by winning their first fourteen games of the season, which was one win shy of tying the NBA record set by the 1948–49 Washington Capitols and the 1993–94 Houston Rockets (15–0). They later finished with a 60–22 record and lost the tiebreaker with the Spurs for the Midwest Division title. Dirk Nowitzki and Steve Nash were both selected to play in the 2003 NBA All-Star Game. It was the second straight All-Star appearance for both players.
The 2002–03 NBA season was the 76ers 54th season in the National Basketball Association, and 40th season in Philadelphia. During the offseason, the Sixers acquired Keith Van Horn from the New Jersey Nets. Van Horn was originally drafted by the Sixers as the second pick in the 1997 NBA draft. The Sixers got off to a fast start winning 15 of their first 19 games, but would then lose 14 of their next 18 games. The team improved on their last season posting a nine-game winning streak at midseason, finishing second in the Atlantic Division with a 48–34 record, with the #4 seed in the Eastern Conference. The Sixers defeated the New Orleans Hornets led by Baron Davis in six games in the first round of the playoffs, but they could not go further in the next round as they lost to the Detroit Pistons in six games. Following the season, Van Horn was traded to the New York Knicks.
