The Austrian Football Bundesliga, also known as Admiral Bundesliga for sponsorship reasons, is the top level of the Austrian football league system. The competition decides the Austrian national football champions, as well the country's entrants for the various European cups run by UEFA. Since Austria stayed in sixteenth place in the UEFA association coefficient rankings at the end of the 2015–16 season, the league gained its first spot for the UEFA Champions League for the 2016–17 season.

Football is the most popular sport in Austria. The Austrian Football Association, the ÖFB, was founded in 1904 and has been a member of FIFA since then. Despite the sport's popularity, except for a successful streak in the early 1930s, the country's national team has not been successful in tournaments. Austria played their first ever European championship as a qualifier in 2016, but finished last in their group and failed to advance. Their only prior appearance in the European championship was in 2008, but was promptly eliminated already at the group stage.

The Austrian Regional League West was a third-tier division of Austrian football introduced in the 1980–81 season as successor of the Alpenliga. It covered the Austrian states of Salzburg, Tyrol and Vorarlberg and was one of three leagues at this level.

The OÖ Liga is the football division of the state of Upper Austria. It's Austrian footballs fourth highest league for clubs of the Upper Austrian Football Association. With the football associations of Carinthia and Styria, the OFV forms the Regional League Central, a portion of the three-pronged Austrian Regional League. Below the OO Liga there are Landesliga Ost and Landesliga West.

The Tiroler Liga is the top division of Tyrol and the fourth-highest division in Austrian football. The competition is organized by the Tirol Football Association. The Tyrolean champion is allowed to start in the Austrian Regional League West, and the two last placed relegate to Landesliga Ost and Landesliga West. Tiroler Liga was part of the 4th highest level which called Austrian Landesliga. However, within Tirol Bundesland, Landesliga was the name of the fifth-tier which teams of Tiroler liga are relegated to.

The Austrian Handball Federation (ÖHB) is the national organization responsible for managing and promoting the practice of handball and beach handball in Austria. Its head office is located in Vienna. ÖHB was founded on 25 January 1925 and is affiliated to the International Handball Federation, European Handball Federation and Austrian Olympic Committee. Current president of ÖHB is Mr. Gerhard Hofbauer, who held the position since 1996. Mr. Martin Hausleitner is current secretary general of ÖHB.
