The North Dakota Fighting Hawks men's ice hockey team is the college ice hockey team at the Grand Forks campus of the University of North Dakota. They are members of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) and compete in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I ice hockey. North Dakota is widely regarded as a premier college hockey school and has one of the most storied programs in NCAA history. UND has made over 30 appearances in the NCAA tournament, appeared in the Frozen Four 22 times, and has won 8 NCAA Division I Championships. The program has also achieved 15 WCHA Regular season Championships, 5 NCHC Regular season Championships, and 12 Conference Tournament championships. The school's former nickname was the Fighting Sioux, which had a lengthy and controversial tenure before ultimately being retired by the university in 2012 due to pressure from the NCAA. The official school nickname is now the Fighting Hawks, a name that was chosen by the university on November 18, 2015.
The 1954 NCAA Division I men's ice hockey tournament was the culmination of the 1953–54 NCAA men's ice hockey season, the 7th such tournament in NCAA history. It was held between March 11 and 13, 1954, and concluded with Rensselaer defeating Minnesota 5-4 in overtime. All games were played at the Broadmoor Ice Palace in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
The MacNaughton Cup is a trophy awarded annually to the regular season conference champion of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA). The trophy is named after James MacNaughton of Calumet, Michigan, who was a supporter of amateur ice hockey. The Cup is hand crafted of pure silver and stands almost three-feet high and weighs nearly 40 pounds.
Joseph Alexander Bell was a Canadian professional ice hockey player who played 62 games in the National Hockey League with the New York Rangers during the 1942–43 and 1946–47 seasons. The rest of his career, which lasted from 1942 to 1956, was spent in the minor leagues. He was born in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. His brother Gordie Bell also played in the NHL. Bell died in February 2014, at the age of 90.
The Western International Hockey League (WIHL) was a senior level ice hockey league that featured teams from the Western United States and Western Canada. It operated from 1946–62 and 1963–88. It grew out of the West Kootenay League, which operated in southeast British Columbia from the 1920s.
Ronald Earle Huston is a Canadian retired professional ice hockey forward who played 79 games in the National Hockey League for the California Golden Seals. He would also play 159 games in the World Hockey Association for the Phoenix Roadrunners. Huston returned to the Western International Hockey League for the start of the 1977-78 season as a member of the Spokane Flyers and led the league in scoring with 119 points. He followed the Spokane Flyers to the Pacific Hockey League the following season. When the Pacific Hockey League folded at the end of the 1978-79 season, he once again returned to the WIHL for the 1979-80 season, this time as a player-coach of the Cranbrook Royals, a team where he started his playing career after he completed his time in junior hockey with the Brandon Wheat Kings. He would continue his role as a player-coach when he moved on to the Elk Valley Blazers of the WIHL from the 1980-81 to the 1982-83 seasons.

It was held between March 15 and 17, 1956, and concluded with Michigan defeating Michigan Tech 7–5. All games were played at the Broadmoor Ice Palace in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
The 1958 NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Tournament was the culmination of the 1957–58 NCAA men's ice hockey season, the 11th such tournament in NCAA history. It was held between March 13 and 15, 1958, and concluded with Denver defeating North Dakota 6-2. All games were played at the Williams Arena in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

1962–63 would have been the 17th season of the Western International Hockey League; however, the Trail Smoke Eaters had represented Canada, and won, at the 1961 World Ice Hockey Championships, and Spokane had placed a team (the Spokane Comets in the professional Western Hockey League commencing with the 1960–61 season. League play resumed for the 1963–64 WIHL season.
The 1958–59 NCAA men's ice hockey season began in November 1958 and concluded with the 1959 NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Tournament's championship game on March 14, 1959 at the RPI Field House in Troy, New York. This was the 12th season in which an NCAA ice hockey championship was held and is the 65th year overall where an NCAA school fielded a team.
