List of political parties in East Timor

This article lists the current and former political parties in East Timor . East Timor is a democratic, multi-party state. The Indonesian parties that were represented in the country during the occupation period (1975-1999) are not listed. Official registration and admission of a party takes place at the East Timor Supreme Court of Justice. This requires the signatures of 20,000 supporters, with 1000 signatures from each municipalities.

Partido Timor Forte (PARTIFOR) is currently striving for registration, but as of January 2021 has not yet met all the requirements. [11] The Party leader is Gregório Saldanha. [12] The same applies to the Partidu Dezenvolvementu Sosiál (PDS). The application was rejected by FITUN in January 2021. [13] The Partidu Unidade Dezenvolvimentu Nasionál (PUDN), which is active in 2021, has not yet provided any information on its application for registration. [14] In 2023, the registration of the Aliança Nacional Democrata (AND) has not yet been completed. [15]

The National Unity Party is a Christian democratic party in East Timor. Its predecessor, the National Party, was founded by Fernanda Borges in October 2005. From it emerged the PUN, which was officially registered on January 17, 2007. Leading members of the Colimau 2000 are members of the PUN. Parts of the Catholic Church in East Timor also support the PUN. The party is centered in the western Municipalities of Ermera and Bobonaro. Party leader is Fernanda Borges, secretary general is Maria Fatima de Deus.

Parliamentary elections were held in East Timor on 22 July 2017. Fretilin narrowly emerged as the largest party in the National Parliament, winning 23 seats to the 22 won by the National Congress for Timorese Reconstruction, which had been the largest party in the outgoing Parliament.

The Alliance for Change and Progress (AMP) (Tetum: Aliansa Mudansa ba Progresu, Portuguese: Aliança para Mudança e Progresso) was a three-party alliance in East Timor. Until 1 February 2018, the alliance was called Parliamentary Majority Alliance (Tetum: Aliansa Maioria Parlamentar, Portuguese: Aliança da Maioria Parlamentar). The motto of the coalition was "Hametuk Hametin Nasaun" (English: Strengthen the nation together). The flag of the AMP showed the flags of the three member parties on a white background.

The Timorese Labour Party, or Trabalhista for short, is one of the five parties in East Timor founded as early as 1974. The party describes itself as democratic and socialist, comparable to the Australian Labor Party (ALP). It has its headquarters in Dili on Rua de Bé Fonte in Bairo Formosa (Gricenfor).

Parliamentary elections were held in East Timor on 21 May 2023. The governing coalition going into the election was a four-party government of Fretilin, the People's Liberation Party (PLP), Kmanek Haburas Unidade Nasional Timor Oan (KHUNTO) and the Democratic Party (PD), whilst the National Congress for Timorese Reconstruction (CNRT) was in opposition but held the presidency.
