The city is situated 20 km from Ludhiana, 45 km from Jalandhar and 140 km from Amritsar. It is situated on the border of the Doaba and Puadh regions. Thr city was Founded by a Hindu Jat, Chaudhary Phul Rai Sanghera, during the 12-13th century as Phulnagar, but later came to be known as Phillaur.

The train named after Baba Fareed Shakar Ganj, a famous Sufi saint and Punjabi poet who lived in Pakpattan between 1173–1266.

The line starts from Kiamari station in the province of Sindh and ends at Peshawar Cantonment Station in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The line serves as the main passenger and freight line of the country. 75% of the country's cargo and passenger traffic uses the line. The line will undergo a six-year 6.8 billion USD upgrade and renovation as part of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor, with the average speed expected to be doubled to 140 kilometers per hour upon completion. The railway track is dual between Keamari and Shahdara Bagh, Chaklala and Golra Sharif.

The total length of this railway line is 1,427 kilometers (887 mi). There are 74 operational railway stations from Kotri Junction to Attock City Junction on this line. Currently, no train is running on this railways line between Kot Adu Junction and Jacoababad Junction.

There are 26 railway stations from Kotri Junction to Zero Point.
Khanewal–Wazirabad Branch Line is one of several branch lines in Pakistan, operated and maintained by Pakistan Railways. The line begins from Khanewal Junction station and ends at Wazirabad Junction station. The total length of this railway line is 325 kilometers (202 mi). There are 30 railway stations from Khanewal Junction to Wazirabad Junction. The line is important that it connects Faisalabad with other parts of the country by rail. The Khanewal–Wazirabad Branch Line was originally named the Wazirabad–Multan Railway under the North Western State Railway. A survey for a railway line began in 1892. The Wazirabad–Lyallpur began construction in 1894 and opened in 1896. The Lyallpur–Multan section began construction the following year and opened in 1899.
Shorkot–Lalamusa Branch Line is one of several branch lines in Pakistan, operated and maintained by Pakistan Railways. The line begins from Shorkot Cantonment Junction station and ends at Lalamusa Junction station. The total length of this railway line is 325 kilometers (202 mi). There are 34 railway stations from Shorkot Junction to Lalamusa Junction. Currently, the sole train operating on this branch line is the Hazara Express, which travels from Karachi to Havelian via the Shorkot-Wazirabad branch line.

There are 12 railway stations from Shorkot Junction to Qila Sheikhupura Junction.
Mehr Express is a passenger train operated daily by Pakistan Railways between Multan and Rawalpindi. The trip takes approximately 14 hours, 30 minutes to cover a published distance of 559 kilometres (347 mi), traveling along a stretch of the Karachi–Peshawar Railway Line, Sher Shah–Kot Addu Branch Line and Kotri–Attock Railway Line.
