Zakynthos or Zante is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea. It is the third largest of the Ionian Islands. Zakynthos is a separate regional unit of the Ionian Islands region, and its only municipality. It covers an area of 405.55 km2 (156.6 sq mi) and its coastline is roughly 123 km (76 mi) in length. The name, like all similar names ending in -nthos, is pre-Mycenaean or Pelasgian in origin. In Greek mythology the island was said to be named after Zakynthos, the son of the legendary Arcadian chief Dardanus.

Vasilikos is a village and a community in the southeastern part of the municipality and the island of Zakynthos. The community consists of the villages Vasilikos, Agios Ioannis , Ano Vasilikos and Xirokastello and the uninhabited island Kalonisi. The village Vasilikos is situated at the easternmost point of Zakynthos, 11 km southeast of Zakynthos (city). The village Xirokastello is situated halfway between Argasi and Vasilikos, at the eastern foot of the hill Skopos.

People from all over the world are visiting Alikanas/Alykanas in the summer. It has a beautiful sandy wide beach On the beach of Alykanas you can find the lily of the sea, protected by Greek and International legislation. The famous caretta caretta might be seen sometimes in these waters, even though they prefer less populated areas.

Alykes is a former municipality on the island of Zakynthos, Ionian Islands, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Zakynthos, of which it is a municipal unit. It is situated along the northeastern coast of the island, about 10 km (6.2 mi) northwest of Zakynthos (city). It has a land area of 42.881 km2 (16.6 sq mi) and a population of 5,203. The seat of the municipality was in Katastari. The next largest towns in the municipality are Skoulikádo, Agios Dimitrios (531), Pigadákia (431), Alikanas (441), and Káto Gerakári (347).

Elatia is a former municipality on the island of Zakynthos, Ionian Islands, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Zakynthos, of which it is a municipal unit. It is located in the northwestern part of the island. With a land area of 111.412 km², it is the largest municipal unit on Zakynthos, comprising about 27 percent of its area. Its population was 1,933 at the 2011 census. The seat of the municipality was in the town of Volimes. The next largest towns are Maries (296), Áno Volímes (262), and Orthoniés (222).

Agios Nikolaos is a small settlement on the island of Zakynthos, Greece. It is located approximately 32 kilometers northwest of Zakynthos City. It has a population of 42, according to a census conducted in 2001. Administratively, it belongs to the village of Volimes, located around 10 kilometres inland.

Anafonitria is a settlement on Zakynthos island, Greece. It is located in the northwestern part of the island, 2 km from the coast, 3 km south of Volimes and 23 km northwest of Zakynthos City. The Navagio bay is 3 km northwest of Anafonitria. The patron saint of Cephalonia, Agios Gerasimos, was known to have lived in Anafonitria as a hermit. The name of the settlement itself was derived from the Monastery of Anafonitria, which was constructed in the 14th century. The patron saint of Zakynthos, Saint Dionysius, was known to have spent his final years in the monastery.

Korithi is a settlement near the northwestern tip of the island of Zakynthos, Greece. It is located around 9 kilometers northeast of Volimes, 2 kilometers north of Agios Nikolaos and 41 kilometers northwest of Zakynthos City. In 1981, the population of Korithi was around 110 inhabitants. In 1991, the population declined to around 72 inhabitants.

Meso Gerakari is a village in the municipal unit of Alykes on the island Zakynthos, Greece. According to a 2001 census, Meso Gerakari contained approximately 402 inhabitants.

Volimes, is a village and a community in the mountainous northwestern part of the island of Zakynthos. It was the seat of the municipality of Elatia. In 2011 its population was 406 for the village, and 571 for the community, which includes the villages Agios Nikolaos, Askos, Varvara, Elies, Korithi and the uninhabited islet Agios Andreas. Volimes is located 1 km west of Ano Volimes, 3 km north of Anafonitria and 23 km northwest of Zakynthos (city). It is close to the Ionian Sea coast, and 7 km southwest of the island's northernmost point Cape Skinari. The village suffered great damage from the 1953 Ionian earthquake.

Agios Dimitrios is a village and a community in the municipal unit Alykes, in the central part of the island Zakynthos, Greece. As of 2011, its population was 531 for the village, and 615 for the community, which includes the village Drakas. Agios Dimitrios is 2 km south of Meso Gerakari, 5 km west of Vanato, 5 km southeast of Katastari and 9 km west of Zakynthos city. The village suffered great damage from the 1953 Ionian earthquake.

Ano Gerakari is a hilltop village and a community in the municipal unit of Alykes on the island of Zakynthos, Greece. In 2011 its population was 176 for the village and 709 for the community, which includes the villages Alonia and Kastelia. Ano Gerakari is adjacent to the northwest of Meso Gerakari, 4 km east of Katastari and 9 km northwest of Zakynthos city. It suffered great damage from the 1953 Ionian earthquake.

Kallithea, is a village and a community in the municipal unit of Alykes in the island of Zakynthos, Greece. In 2011 Kallithea's population was 238 people. It is situated at the eastern foot of the Vrachionas mountains, at about 60 m (200 ft) elevation. It is 3 km (1.9 mi) southeast of Katastari, 3 km (1.9 mi) southwest of Ano Gerakari, 3 km (1.9 mi) northwest of Agios Dimitrios and 12 km (7.5 mi) northwest of Zakynthos city. The farm of the Science Park Zakynthos, a Norwegian-Greek institute that focuses on sustainable water use, is situated in Kallithea. The village suffered great damage from the 1953 Ionian earthquake.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Ioanni Korai</span> Greek painter

Ioanni Korai was a Greek painter that shared the same name as his famous uncle Ioannis Korais. He was a prominent painter on the Ionian Islands. His family migrated to Zakynthos from Chios. He was a member of the Heptanese School. His contemporaries were Dionysios Kallivokas and Nikolaos Koutouzis. He was taught painting by Ioannis Korais. He was active during the Modern Greek Enlightenment and Greek romanticism in art. He influenced countless Greek and Italian painters. Korai brought Greek artwork into the Modern Greek art period. Twelve of his paintings survived. His most notable painting is a portrait of Kyriakos Chorafas painted in 1826. The painting is at the National Gallery of Athens.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Demetrios Nomikos</span>

Demetrios Nomikos was a Greek painter, goldsmith, and priest. He shared the same last name with other famous Greek painters. Georgios Nomikos, Demetrios Nomikos and his brother Nicholas Nomikos. He is one of the early representatives of the Heptanese School of painting. He was active during the Greek Baroque and Rococo. He worked with notable Greek painter Antonios Notaras. Konstantinos Kontarinis, Stylianos Stavrakis and Nikolaos Kallergis were active on the same islands around the same period. Nomikos was a master gilder. According to the Institute of Neohellenic Research, five of his works survived. His most notable works are at the Loverdos Museum.
