This is a list of universities and other higher educational institutions in East Timor. East Timor has one public national university, National University of East Timor, founded in 2000 to replace the Indonesian-era Universitas Timor Timur, which ceased operations in 1999. The country also has a number of private universities, including the Dili Institute of Technology, the Institute of Business, Instituto Superior Cristal, Joao Saldanha University, Universidade Dili, Universidade Oriental Timor Lorosa'e, and Universidade da Paz. A Catholic university, Universidade Católica Timorense, was established in 2021. All of East Timor's universities are located in Dili, the capital, but several also have satellite campuses in other locations.
In addition to universities, East Timor also has a number of specialized higher education institutions. There are several technical schools, including the East Timor Coffee Institute, Instituto Dom Boaventura de Timor-Leste, Instituto Ciência da Saúde, Instituto Profissional de Canossa, and the government-run Instituto Politécnico de Betano. East Timor has two teacher training institutes, Instituto Católico para Formação de Professores and Instituto São João de Brito. A new teachers' college, Naroman Esperansa, is currently being built in Gleno. [1] There are also several theological institutions, including Instituto de Ciências Religiosas, Instituto Filosófico de São Francisco de Sales, Instituto Superior de Filosofia e de Teologia, and St. Peter and St. Paul Major Seminary. The government also operates the Instituto da Defesa Nacional to provide higher education to members of the military.
Most of East Timor's institutions of higher education are accredited by the National Agency for Academic Assessment and Accreditation (ANAAA), run by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Culture.

The Community of Portuguese Language Countries, also known as the Lusophone Community, is an international organization and political association of Lusophone nations across five continents, where Portuguese is an official language. The CPLP operates as a privileged, multilateral forum for the mutual cooperation of the governments, economies, non-governmental organizations, and peoples of the Lusofonia. The CPLP consists of 9 member states and 33 associate observers, located in Europe, South America, Asia, Africa and Oceania, totaling 38 countries and 4 organizations.
East Timor is divided into 14 municipalities, which are former districts. One municipality is also a Special Administrative Region (SAR). The municipalities are divided into administrative posts, and further subdivided into sucos (villages). Atauro Island was initially a part of Dili Municipality, but became a separate municipality on 1 January 2022. The borders between Cova Lima and Ainaro and between Baucau and Viqueque were changed in 2003.

Mambai, also called Mambae or Manbae, is a language spoken by the Mambai people, the second largest ethnic group in the island country of East Timor.
The Order of Timor-Leste is the highest honour currently awarded by East Timor. Established in 2009, the order was created after the original honours granted by East Timor. It is of a more general and broader nature than the original orders related to East Timor's independence. The order recognises the contributions of East Timorese and foreign nationals who have made a significant contribution to East Timor, the Timorese or Mankind in general.
Armando Manuel de Barros Serra Marques Guedes is a political scientist, anthropologist and a former diplomat with expertise in international relations, political science, theory and philosophy, diplomacy, security and defence, and geopolitics. He is a professor of political science, law, and international politics at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, as well as the professor responsible for geopolitics at the Instituto Universitário Militar, Instituto de Estudos Superiores Militares.

St. John de Britto Institute also referred to by its acronym ISIB or by its Portuguese name Instituto São João de Brito is a private Catholic coeducational higher education institution run by the Timor-Leste Region of the Society of Jesus in Kasait-Ulmera, East Timor. It was established by the Jesuits in 2015 to train students to be secondary school teachers for the country. The school was named after St. John de Britto, a Portuguese Jesuit missionary and martyr.
Manuel Cárceres da Costa is an East Timorese politician and writer. Between June 2018 and March 2022, he was the Minister of Justice, serving in the VIII Constitutional Government of East Timor led by Prime Minister Taur Matan Ruak.
Dionísio da Costa Babo Soares is an East Timorese politician, and a member of the National Congress for Timorese Reconstruction (CNRT). From June 2018 to May 2020, he was the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, under the VIII Constitutional Government of East Timor; he had earlier served as Minister of State, Coordinator of State Administration Affairs and Justice, Minister of State Administration, and Minister of Justice.

In 2020, he served briefly as the Minister of Finance under the VIII Constitutional Government of East Timor led by Prime Minister Taur Matan Ruak. Previously, in 2017–18, he was Minister of Education and Culture in the earlier VII Constitutional Government, led by Mari Alkatiri.
The Centro Acção Social-Democrata Timorense, abbreviated as Centro ASDT or CASDT is a political party in Timor-Leste. Founded by its late first party president Gil da Costa A.N. Alves, he was the former Secretary General of the Associação Social-Democrata Timorense (ASDT) party. The party motto is “Justiça, Unidade, Solidaridade”.

Leandro Maria Alves is the Roman Catholic Bishop of Baucau, East Timor. He was appointed on 26 April 2023. Previously, he served as deputy parish priest, parish administrator and parish priest of Dili Cathedral, and in many other offices in the Catholic Church in East Timor.
