A London fog is a hot tea-based drink that consists of Earl Grey tea, steamed milk, and a sweetener. [1]
It was invented in Vancouver, Canada, [2] in the 1990s by Mary Loria. Loria, who was pregnant at the time, frequented Vancouver's Buckwheat Cafe. After inventing the drink, she began ordering the drink at other cafes and recommending it to others. The trend spread. Despite conceiving the drink herself, Loria does not know who created the name. [3] The term "fog" refers to the steamed milk. [4]

Variations of the London fog involve substituting the tea leaves and using milk alternatives. It is popular in the Pacific Northwest and Canada's West Coast. [5]

Earl Grey tea is a tea blend which has been flavoured with oil of bergamot. The rind's fragrant oil is added to black tea to give Earl Grey its unique taste. Traditionally, Earl Grey was made from black teas such as Chinese keemun, and therefore intended to be served without milk. Some blend the tea with lapsang souchong tea which lends a smoky character. Other varieties have been introduced as well, such as green or oolong.

The amount of milk can be higher in a café con leche en vaso or a café con leche de desayuno. Cuban and Puerto Rican establishments often prepare the drink with sugar. Sugar or sweetener is added to taste. It is similar to the Italian caffè latte and the French café au lait.
Argo Tea began as a chain of tea cafes that was founded in the Lincoln Park community area in Chicago, Illinois, in June 2003. It was headquartered in Chicago's Loop community area. It had more than a dozen locations in the Chicago metropolitan area before expanding in 2010 to New York City, where it opened four locations that year and then expanded to St. Louis and Boston. As of October 2011 the chain had 26 locations and distribution in over 3,000 grocery stores. In its first decade, it has grown simultaneously with the tea market.
