The 69th New York Infantry Regiment is an infantry regiment of the United States Army. It is from New York City, part of the New York Army National Guard. It is known as the "Fighting Sixty-Ninth", a name said to have been given by Robert E. Lee during the Civil War. An Irish heritage unit, as the citation from poet Joyce Kilmer, illustrates, this unit is also nicknamed the "Fighting Irish", immortalized in Joyce Kilmer's poem When the 69th Comes Home. Between 1917 and 1992 it was also designated as the 165th Infantry Regiment. It is headquartered at the 69th Regiment Armory in Manhattan.

Battle of Longeau

The Battle of Longeau, was a battle of the Franco-Prussian War, it took place on December 16, 1870 in Longeau-Percey, near the city of Dijon, France. The fighting lasted about three hours, and ended in a victory for the Prussian Infantry Brigade under Colmar Freiherr von der Goltz and the German XIV Corps infantry under the command of Lieutenant General August von Werder, over French troops commanded by General Pierre Arbellot de Vacqueur. Troops were dispatched from Langres to Longeau. The French suffered significant casualties, in both manpower and equipment. This was one of the only occasions during the war when the Germans had access to the range of cannons in the citadel and forts surrounding Langres.
